While this cookbook does preserve the foodways of southern African Americans of the past, the recipes are food traditions that live today in the rural South. The author has included also recipes that are traditional treatments of more recently available foods, such as lobster with cornbread stuffing.

Ok....some of the recipes in here you will never do.....But you need to know about them....If you are trully interested in how the black folks in the kitchen always had the nack this is the book you want....You will laugh and cry at her stories...but she is on the mark!......If you never make the recipes you will still enjoy the book....Buy it...and trust me!

The Soul Of Southern Cooking is a wonderful combination of recipes and stories that evoke a time when black families had to make-do in the midst of hard times, yet were able to develop and enjoy a variety of delicious meals with a culinary tradition popularly referred to as "soul food". From Homemade Hog Head Souse; Neckbone and Macaroni Stew; Delta Fried Catfish; and Sunday's Fried Corn; to Boiled Chicken Feet and Legs; Stovetop Roast Beef; Celery Seed Dressing; Ten-Minute Oven Pecan Brittle; and Mrs. Hunter's Southern Tea Cakes, The Soul Of Southern Cooking fully lives up to its title and will prove a welcome and unique addition to the family cookbook collection.

Authentic Southern Cooking

I've had this book a while, but I just sat down tonight and re-read it cover to cover. I enjoyed it so much that I felt compelled to post a review.

The author, an African-American woman from the Mississippi Delta, writes the book in a way that presents the recipes alongside fun little snippets of African American culture in mid 20th century MS. The stories may be African-American, but I can assure you that, minus just a few exceptions, the recipes in this book are quintessentially and universally Southern - black and white. I'm personally not much of a cook, but I am from the South and grew up with my grandparents who were both old-school Mississippi folks. My grandfather gardened and my grandmother cooked most of the dishes in this book in a very similar way to how Mrs Starr spells them out. I can't recommend this book enough if you're looking for a good and simple take on true classic southern cooking.

Catfish, collard greens, cornbread, okra, peach cobbler... It's all here.

Eric Carle first published The Very Hungry Caterpillar in 1969, fully intending to create a series of interactive creature books for children. Carle, who says he'd rather watch a bug attempt to climb over a pebble than join an expedition to Mount Everest, appreciates the small things in life: the Eyed Elator (Alaus oculatus), to be exact--unremarkable except for that when this beetle falls on its back, it can't roll over to get up. Instead, it will stretch and release a snap mechanism that clicks and flips the beetle through the air, and ideally, back onto its feet.

The very clumsy click beetle has no trouble with the clicking and flipping part, but it does have trouble landing on its feet. The young beetle tries and tries again, encouraged by an ambling turtle, a slithering snail, and a scurrying mouse. Finally, when a curious boy approaches, the beetle takes coaching from a wise old click beetle ("QUICK, CLICK and FLIP!") and succeeds. At once stark and sophisticated, Carle's trademark collage art fills the pages of his latest Very volume (The Very Quiet Cricket; The Very Lonely Firefly). The author's opening note explains that the persevering click beetle often lands on its back and is unable to right itself. By stretching, it releases a snap mechanism that makes an audible click and flips the beetle into the air, after which it lands on its feetAsometimes. Coached by a wise old click beetle and encouraged by a string of supportive animals ("Better luck next time.... Keep on trying"), Carle's stylized little beetle repeatedly attempts to maneuver himself off his back and onto his feet. The book's never-give-up message registers loud and clear, unlike the "Click" sound that youngsters may well expect each time this word appears as the beetle hurls himself back into the air. Rather, the computer chip (which has a replaceable battery) activates only onceAto emit six clicks, during the beetle's climactic triple-somersault. (But if the reader flips the pages quickly, instead of turning them ceremoniously, unwanted clicks clack out.) Ultimately, the gimmick distracts from the story and does not enhance it. All ages. Pres-Grade 2-Carle's charming little hero gets stuck on its back and can't get up. An elder click beetle advises the youngster how to right itself, but it can't quite get the hang of flipping itself over on its legs. Encouraged to keep trying by a turtle, a snail, a worm, and a mouse, the small creature becomes more and more discouraged as it keeps landing on its back. When a curious boy starts investigating, the beetle becomes frightened and finally executes the perfect click and flip to land on its feet. The book features a clicking sound effect at the end, courtesy of a strategically placed microchip. Done in colored tissue-paper collage, the illustrations burst from the pages and are charmingly rendered. When the boy is introduced, readers see him from the beetle's perspective, as just two huge feet. Sure to be loved and requested again and again, Click Beetle is a well-crafted story, joyfully illustrated, that speaks to the hearts of young children.

My 4 year old loved this book!

My 4 year old came home from preschool and talked about this book for 2 weeks! He drew click beetles over and over again, and told me how the story goes. He was one impressed 4 year old and any mom knows when their child mentions a book over and over again, it must be good!

Great Book to Teach Kids to Keep Trying!

This book is well-liked by my class of four and five year olds. The story is clear and engaging. My students especially enjoy opening to the back page to hear the beetle's CLICK!
The little click beetle repeatedly strives in the story to CLICK and flip over onto his feet, a feat shown to him by an older, wiser click beetle. He tries to show this new trick to a variety of other critters with no success. The critters encourage him to keep trying.
We used this story in class to discuss the importance of persistence and practice to learn something new. This book also sparked a discussion about being kind and respectful, as we talked about how things might have been different if the critters in the story had ridiculed the click beetle for his failure instead of encouraging him. You could challenge children to tell how the ending would have been different if the little click beetle hadn't mastered his CLICK at the right time at the end.
Definitely a classroom staple, along with most of Eric Carle's other titles.

This book was crucial in helping me develop a thorough understanding of calculus and preparing me for the AP exam. It contains very detailed explanations of each concept, followed by many clear examples that demonstrate how to apply the concept in problem-solving. It is very well-written and easily understandable. By practicing the examples and reviewing the problem-solving strategies offered in the book, I was able to do well on my calculus finals in school and I felt much more confident about taking the AP exam.

As a World History teacher, I am always on the prowl for materials that will both engage my high school students and deepen their understanding of the world and its history. This chart works on both levels. It has color-coded designations of the major empires, at a glance showing contemporaneity for various time periods, and has accessible, brief, and relevant highlights through time. Students of varying levels should appreciate this chart, prodding some to learn more about something found within it and others to contextualize for the big picture. In a word, it's aptly named "useful."

Very well done Timeline-of-History Wall Chart

I keep this 60x90 cm wall chart right next to me at the computer where I write and refer to it frequently. It has an amazing amount of detail, yet portrayed in a visually appealing and straight-forward style. The vertical axis on the portrait-orientation chart is the time line, divided into centuries and historical ages (an inset gives a smaller-scale view of geological history back to the Big Bang). The horizontal axis is divided into geographical regions. Lots of photos share the space with helpful text notations. Lines and arrows allow you to follow migrations and cultural movements, such as Germanic Tribes moving in on Rome in waves and throwing the Western Roman Empire into the Dark Ages. There are even a couple of inset boxes giving interesting speculation about future events. It's a great tool for getting a visual overview of the most significant periods of history, how they relate in terms of time scale and location, as well as how they transitioned. Highly recommended.

Time on a Chart

I'm a history lover and I suppose I'd always unconsciously considered that events happened linearly--not simultaneously. When I finally realized that the world and its civilizations developed at the same time but separately, I knew I needed some resource to help me picture these developments. This chart has been a very effective learning tool for me to carefully place what I learn into the accurate time period along with its companion world developments. Thanks so much-- from one chartmaker to another!!

About the Author

William N. Tilchin earned a PhD at Brown University, where co-editor Charles E. Neu was his thesis director, in 1992. Since 1994 Dr. Tilchin has been teaching U.S. diplomatic history and other subjects in the College of General Studies at Boston University. He is the author of Theodore Roosevelt and the British Empire: A Study in Presidential Statecraft (1997) and many essays on Roosevelt's foreign policy and related topics.

Not same as their history review books

I thought this princeton was going to be similar to the format of their history books. IT IS NOT! The lessons are very brief and skeletal. It will give you the meaning or definition of something and that's it. On from there, it's just examples, but no lesson. It doesn't work for me.

At last a fitting tribute

This book is a labour of love from two men who wish to share with the world the vocal genius of Perry Como. Michael Feinstein says in his foreword that the name of Como is all but forgotten. How true that is. Perhaps the Como family not willing to take part in this book is partly to blame for that.
This book states clearly that the authors wish to study the professional life of the singer and to honour his lifetime of privacy. We have for the first time ever a complete discography, complete TV appearances, complete live appearances of the whole of Como's career. Articles, stories, broadcast interviews are all assembled together in one place for the first time. No hidden secrets have been revealed or discovered - perhaps it is true about Como "What you see is what you get".
As someone who has collected Como since 1957 this book is a pure joy to read - a great tribute to a most under-rated singer. Yes, he made too many novelty records and that is perhaps why he is always ignored when comparing great 20th crooners - but he is up there will Crosby and Sinatra - investigate those CD's that do not just carry the 50's novelty hits and you will experience a great vocal talent.
A great achivement by two writers who have no other goal than to promote the talent of a great singer. A fine book - highly recommended.The Definitive Perry Como Collection

Como reinstated

It was Mark Twain who famously said, "Everyone seems to complain about the weather, but no one ever seems to be able to do anything about it." If Twain were alive today, he might just as easily have directed his remarks at Perry Como as at the weather. For decades, seemingly, we have been told by music critics that Perry Como is the most underrated singer of the Twentieth Century.
Everyone is whining, no one is doing anything about it. Well, here at long last is a beginning, a powerful step in the right direction and an impressive attempt to restore the smooth crooner back to where he rightfully belongs.
Malcolm Macfarlane and Ken Crossland wisely eschew delving into the singer's private affairs which gives them the freedom to concentrate on what really matters. This is not to say that Crossland flinches from confronting some of his subject's darker side when the occasion demands it. He simply does not dwell on such things for very long.
The statistics are, indeed, surprising. When the music historian, Joel Whitburn, published his list of the top ten chart performers for the second half of the 20th Century, Como emerged as the only representative of the pre-rock era. As Michael Caine might have put it, "Not many people know that." Yet, the news would not have come as a surprise to Como's own professional peers - notably Peggy Lee, Jo Stafford, Mel Torme, Johnny Mercer, among others, all of whom have paid tribute to his wonderful voice and impeccable phrasing. Here we come up against a strange paradox: the singer's singer who also happened to have immense popular appeal. The unraveling of this mystery is what has made the present book such a fascinating read.
A more weighty quotation also springs to mind, this time from the pen of the acclaimed biographer, Hilary Spurling, and which like that of Mark Twain has a curious relevance to the topic under discussion. "I have tried to pare back what Michael Holroyd called history's cuticle of lies..." She was writing about Sarah Brownell, George Orwell's controversial widow. Perry Como, a far from contentious figure, may not have been the victim of lies exactly but history's accretions have burdened him with some peculiar distortions. For instance, he is unfairly saddled with the reputation of being a mere singer of novelty songs. Ken Crossland effectively demolishes that canard.
History's lies also operate at a more sinister level(Michael Feinstein's Foreword obliquely touches on the subject)and here we return to Orwell and to the chilling Orwellian term "unperson" which revives memories of Stalinist Russia where an individual's entire record is ruthlessly erased from the pages of history. It has happened in a small way to Bing though without malice aforethought.
One example: the movie "High Society" is routinely advertised nowadays as starring Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly. In other words, history is daily being rewritten in an alternative version because those in a position to set the record straight are no longer with us. Feinstein's cautionary introduction reminds us that, in this mutable and shallow culture, it is all too easy to become "the forgotten man."
This superb book should serve both as a corrective text and a stern warning.

Perry Como Biography

Not your typical light summer read, "Perry Como, a Biography" by Malcolm Macfarlane and Ken Crossland, is difficult to put down. For those who enjoy a story of a talented American whose record sales remind us that today's music lovers should give the man a listen - this book is for you.. and for those who enjoy detailed lists of dates, numbers, names, and locations - this book, too, is for you, as its neatly compartmentalized segments both narrate and tabulate his life. References are plenty, which had to be a challenge, as Como was famously private.

The book is direct and never fawning, but it's obvious the authors share a respect for the man's talent - it's certainly encouraged me to review my Como music library and seek additions to it!
