GREAT BOOK!

Great book to use to study if you are a pharmacy student or pharmacy technician. The book lists the adverse effects, the uses, recommended doses and other information for frequently used medications. There are also practice questions. A useful book. I would recommend this to anyone interested in learning about medications whether or not you are in the healthcare practice.

About the Author
Lee Anne Peck, Ph.D., is associate professor of journalism and mass communications in the School of Communication at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley. Lee Anne Peck has taught English, journalism, and communications courses since 1988. Before teaching at UNC, she was assistant professor of international communications at Franklin College Switzerland, Lugano. Over the years, she has advised three student newspapers. Peck's professional experience began in 1976 as a correspondent for the Moline (Ill.) Daily Dispatch. She then edited and then managed the Northern Colorado Choice Magazine of the Front Range. In the mid-1980s, she edited and wrote for publications in Indiana and Delaware; she has worked for the Fort Collins Coloradoan as an editor, a columnist and writing coach and for the Rocky Mountain News as a copy editor. Peck has also worked at the Tampa Tribune's online product, Tampa Bay Online, and for Microsoft's online publication, Denver Sidewalk. Guy Reel, Ph.D., is associate professor of mass communication at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. A former newspaper reporter and editor for The Commercial Appeal of Memphis, Tenn., Reel teaches journalism and mass communication and has written extensively about issues in journalism and communication history. He is author of The National Police Gazette and the Making of the Modern American Man, 1879-1906 (2006), a study of portrayed masculinities in 19th Century tabloids. He received his Ph.D. from Ohio University, his master's from the University of Memphis and his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee.

Because Truth is Stranger Than Fiction...

When it comes to ethics, it's all very well and good to discuss philosophers, but when dealing with real-life situations, isn't it better to have a modern example of what real people did? This is just what "Media Ethics at Work" provides, as well as how people feel about their decisions later. It is also a very gripping book, with each chapter covering a case. While all deal with important ethical issues, some chapters are more compelling than others. Two chapters that will stay with me are about the unexpected consequences of covering a gruesome death and the exposure of a professor harming his students by withholding their grades. Another story that will stay with me is more lighthearted; while it addresses some serious ethical issues, the chapter featuring the groundhog had me laughing hysterically.

Western historical romance

Do you know that line in books where the main male character is super impressed by the female character who stoically succeeds at the monumental task they have no training or experience and some how does it incredibly well and better than everyone else... "Any other woman would be crying and complaining about now..." Well this is the exact opposite of those kind of stories! These women just suffer through everything hating and crying through almost the entire story. I couldn't read it again but by the time you get to the end you really feel like you been through everything with them.

About the Author
Herman E. Daly is professor at the University of Maryland, School of Public Affairs. He is a cofounder of Ecological Economics, the leading journal in the discipline, and recipient of the Right Livelihood Award, also known as the “alternative Nobel Prize.” Joshua Farley is a professor of community development and applied economics and assistant research professor at the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics at the University of Vermont.

Not there yet...

I was optimistic that this text would be the first well-organized one in Ecological Economics (which I teach, at the college level). Unfortunately, the effort is still a work in progress. The authors do a decent job of presenting a wide range of material, but they do not identify and use central organizing principles the way one would find in a standard (neoclassical) economics textbook. And while the book introduces some standard features of a textbook, e.g. sidebars and boxed material, this seems more of an afterthought, and the layout is still rudimentary (e.g., all monochomatic...how hard is it to use some color?).

The authors (Daly is a giant in the field, Farley not far behind) undertook a very challenging task. It is relatively easy to write a textbook that follows in the footsteps of *many* other versions, with only minor modifications; this, on the other hand, is a pioneering effort, seeking to create a pedagogically sound structure, for a very young field, where none currently exists. Daly's and Farley's effort improves significantly over previous ones, and the book can serve as a very good reference, but I would still find it pedagogically difficult from which to teach.

Reality-based Economics

I have never been motivated to pick up a textbook on economics and learn the principles of the field because I was always put off by what I perceived to be a disconnect with reality. The authors captured my sentiment perfectly in the Note to Instructors. If, like me, you don't believe that: "growth will solve the economic problem, that narrow self-interest is the only dependable human motive, that technology will always find a substitute for any depleted resource, that the market can efficiently allocate all types of goods, that free markets always lead to an equilibrium balancing of supply and demand, or that the laws of thermodynamics are irrelevant to economics"--then this is the book for you!

The text is exceptionally well-written, providing a thorough grounding in the usually-ignored ecosystem services and physical limitations relevant to economics. But there is also a large dose of traditional economic theory complete with the jargon of the field. Through this book, one can learn enough about traditional economics to understand the key terms and concepts, but also where these concepts run aground in the face of physical, ecological, or market limitations. The authors at times do fawn over market efficiency, and other key tenets (kool-aid?) of economic theory, but this is okay with me because they A) expose the limits of these regimes, and B) placate the true-believers that they do not misunderstand or undervalue the magic of markets.

What is most amazing to me is that economics has not always been framed in this way. It seems self-evident that it should have been from the start (as many of the first economists thought it should be, in fact). But I can understand that in an empty world, the neoclassical approach is a simpler starting point that has proven itself to be successful, powerful, and useful. But as we transition into a full-world scenario, we must not tie ourselves to a sinking ship: Daly and Farley point the way to a new economic foundation that must accompany a successful transition to a sustainable future.

An important and vital book

Firstly I must state that this review is my interpretation, and that this book uses the prescribed language of economics . If you learnt your politics and economic understanding of how society works through the corporate media - lets face it many of us do - then this book will bowl you over. If like me you are not familiar with economic jargon it will be a challenge but everything is provided to facilitate your understanding. If you are university educated with a regulation neo-classical economics degree - as the authors are - you would no doubt be familiar with the authors and their considerable output, which includes the first edition of this book. One can understand how human society developed the present economic system with its initial focus on accounting and the appraisal of future investment and production, however this book maintains that the model has been stretched far beyond its theoretical capacities and practical applications; it enables the reader to see why.
The provision of goods and services and the context of fair trading have been divorced from `our economic reason for living' for a mad grab of money making from money itself, the mediaeval salamander eating its own tail as it were. Our religion has become what all religions warn us about; money, and it is the worst kind of religion because it has become an addiction; 'money addiction'. This book is a reference point for the student of the now peak oil, climate change and carbon depositing era. Much of the establishment will not welcome this book, not because of its embracing view, logic or research base but that it challenges their power and money base. However if we are going to provide a meaningful life for our species then we need to reassess how we plan and organise ourselves and the finite resources of our planet. Most of us like to live in pleasant abodes where we direct behaviors that optimise our special space, however this book mounts a compelling case for treating the whole planet as our abode. It points to the obvious really, to respect our humanity and our abode (planet) first. Then use the knowledge that we have accumulated over the ages to harness those values and provide ourselves with a worthwhile reason for living. And yes it can be done and you know what, it wont be humans who will decide, but our planet. Planet states: If you don't respect yourselves and me and stop using an economic system that causes enormous human misery, polluting my atmosphere, earth and water I cannot provide you with a nurturing space and produce the food you require to go on living.
I did miss that there is no introduction to the second edition, it seems the main difference (compared to the first edition) is a completely new chapter on human behavior, challenging and worth while and good reason to buy the new edition (if you have already read the first edition). Pity the publishers did not attend well enough to proof reading the new chapter, however don't let that stop you buying this essential book.

This is the 1st time I've written a review. It was so bad I felt it was my duty to let people know before buying how truly bad it is. I read a few reviews about how "great" this book is so I decided it would be a good summer read... It's poorly written. The dialogue is ridiculous. The plot doesn't make much sense. Characters are introduced for no reason. The ending never ties up any loose ends. Etc., etc., etc. It's like a horribly written soap opera. Not worth your time. Not even for a fun summer read.

This book was really great. Really authentic- you could tell the author knew what he was talking about. A lot of detail that made it seem legit and really created a world around you.

Why I didn't give it 5 stars: So, so many characters. It gets confusing. After finishing the book I'd estimate I only know who 5-10 are for certain (there were 30+ characters).

Dialogue between the two main characters seems unconvincing at times.

I liked this book a lot, I really did. I'm not sure I have an interest in reading the next one. We shall see!

Brilliant and Scandalous - Dreamy

I haven't finished a book in the speed of 3 days in a lonnnnnnng time ... not since I read Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz, i think. Anyway, I loved the information on these great places. Kwan is a master of name dropping and I love it, because I don't want to take a darn history lesson in between a story, so he only briefs and name drops on real places and people and adds just enough detail for you to... you know, look it up on google yourself, if you don't know about it, but don't waste my time and bore me with long sweeping history so I lose the thread of the story. Brilliant. The book feels perfectly paced. allows you to dream as you peek into a world you would probably never otherwise see. I loved it!!!!

It's all about the bazillionaire Asians and their super egos, their eccentricities, hypocrisy, snobbishness. How money is both their savior and their downfall.

I couldn't recommend this book even for a laugh

This book, released in 2015, is several years out of date with modern Objective-C coding practices and information. From the few samples I've seen in this book I would rather use it as kindling in a campfire than tell someone to learn to program with this. Bad habits expound like unnamed parameters in init methods, improper use of ivars rather than properties, and using a string to store a color. Really, go get Objective-C Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide (2nd Edition) (Big Nerd Ranch Guides) and be done with it, a far superior book that is written by people that know Objective-C intimately.

There is NO SOURCE CODE for this book even though the preface says so. We were ready to adopt this book for our classes in spite of some of the errors, but this one fact drove it over the edge.

Another fine resource from the folks at REA!

If you are taking a course covering the theory of Advanced Calculus or perhaps in introductory Real Analysis, this book is a great buy. There is alot of material covered, but make sure that you compare the syllabus of your couse and the contents of this book before buying. This book contains fully (and I mean fully) worked out solutions to very difficult problems that you may encounter in such courses. My only complaint is that there should have been included more of the proof-type questions for infinte suequences and series. However, if you taking merely an introductory calculus course, you would be better off buying REA's "Calulus Problem Solver", which is another great book.

This book contains a wealth of useful information. My only complaint is that REA hasn't re-set the book in a decent type face. Instead, they continue to publish these books that look like they were typeset on a manual typewriter. Very hard on the eyes...

Fantastic version of the best loved stories from the Arabian Nights

This book is the follow-up companion to Haddawy's masterful Arabian Nights, and both volumes are indispensable to anyone who loves this famous collection of stories. As Haddawy explains, the need for this separate collection is made necessary by the Night's curious history....

When the work was first written down in the 1400s, it was given the title "The 1,001 Nights"--the length of time Shahrazad beguiled King Shahrayar with her wondrous tales. Despite this lofty title, the early manuscripts uniformly end after about 300 nights. It appears no one in the Muslim world minded this inconsistency, and the number 1,001 was taken figuratively to mean "an infinite number." When Europeans first "discovered" the work in the 1700s, however, they assumed these early manuscripts were incomplete and set out to "finish" the work by adding enough tales to reach the necessary 1,001 nights--drawn from other collections, folklore or brand-new stories written to order. Among these later additions are several stories that have, paradoxically, become some of the most famous, best-loved tales of all: Sindbad the Sailor, Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp, and Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves.

This leads to a difficult situation when translating the Nights. If your goal is to accurately and authentically translate the work, do you include these subsequent stories? Although they may not have been part of the original manuscript, these tales have been associated with the Nights for 300 years... should that count for anything?

When Haddawy first set out to translate the Nights, he chose not to include anything outside of the original core collection of tales. He made an excellent case for doing so--the original stories have a thematic uniformity and high literary merit, as they come from one of the greatest periods of Islamic literature. The subsequent stories, while entertaining, have a hodge-podge of ideas and themes and were quite often put together by literary hacks simply to take up space.

Still, some of those stories are too good (and too popular) to abandon altogether. That brings us to Haddawy's follow-up volume that puts forth exquisite translations of a handful of stories that, while outside the original collection, have come to define the Nights for the general public. Included are Aladdin, Ali Baba, Sindbad and the story of Qamar al-Zaman. All of the virtues of the first volume are carried over to this one--the translation could not be improved upon and the introduction is excellent. Besides being authentic, Haddawy's renditions are also vivid and immediate, without any of the purple patches found in Burton or other Victorian translations. In fact, as a credit to Haddawy's skills as a translator, you can distinguish the subtle differences in tone and style between these stories, which came from separate sources. I don't know how to describe this other than to say that there are moments in Aladdin when you can feel the influence of the roughly contemporaneous Charles Perrault (natural enough since the story was first introduced in a French version of the Nights), which is not felt in, say, Sindbad (which was drawn from an Egyptian manuscript).

This is a HUGELY enjoyable read that you will want to return to again and again.

Muhsin Mahdi has truly revived the spirit of the story with the '..Nights' in a remarkably electric and vivid fashion! This is the best of the best. No more cluttered or muddy allusions to trip over due to an author's choice of words. . The stories of Sinbad are told in so literal and exciting a fashion to read now, and even again and again. I feeeel like I've been t here before. A masterpiece of splendid delight.

I did a lot of research when choosing a translation of the 1001 nights, and according to numerous experts this is the one to have at this point in time, especially if you haven't read these stories before.
