The analysis of how all these factors culminated in the collapse of apartheid is enhanced by lengthy biographical profiles of sixteen key personalities, including Stephen Biko, Willem deKlerk, Nelson Mandela, and Desmond Tutu. A selection of thirteen primary documents, including a letter from Nelson Mandela in exile and his speech after being released from prison, illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid and will be valuable for student research. A glossary of key terms and a timeline of important events add reference value.

About the Author

LINDSAY MICHIE EADES lectured in history at the University of Transkei in South Africa from 1989 to 1991. She has also taught at Kelly College, Devon, England, and from 1992 to 1997, was a history professor at Chowan College, East Carolina University and Greensboro College in North Carolina. She is author of A Case Study of an Appeaser: Robert Hadow in the Foreign Office, 1931-1939 (Praeger, 1996).

Great story

I loved this story, first because the heroine wasn't a plastic twenty-something and secondly because she wasn't afraid to step into a new situation despite a bad history. Kurt just makes your mouth water and the sparks between the two literally combust on the pages. Delia has big-time trust issues and Kurt is determined to help her bury her demons. This is a wonderful love story, an erotic dream, and a hero and heroine you can fall in love with. The only thing wrong with the story is I wanted more!

Cris Anson is one of my favorite authors, and she certainly did not disappoint with this one. Her books are hot and deliciously sexy. Her books are well-written and the characters are memorable. I love cougar stories!

Older widow Delia Barnes never imagined the black eye she's sporting due to her own clumsiness would ultimately lead to a romantic entanglement with a younger man - and a Dom at that! It's an erotic romance convention so it just makes sense for Delia to shrug off her injury with the comment "I didn't say `Yes Master' quick enough." What she doesn't expect is to be overheard by a real Dom who believes a new Master is exactly what she needs - and he's more than willing to fill that role.

Dom Kurt Reinhardt is already in a sour mood when he overhears Delia's explanation about her black eye - and it rubs him the wrong way. His being at the hotel has nothing to do with the convention; instead he's in town on business and honestly couldn't care less about the ad he just pitched to potential clients. His friend and business partner Logan is all kinds of excited about the convention since in his mind that means there's all sorts of potential for wild hot sex, but Kurt just isn't interested. He hasn't been interested in being with a woman in three long years, not since Gina...

Kurt might have thought he wasn't interested in getting romantically involved with new woman but Delia's comment and her infectious laugh just beg for a little one on one attention. His offer to `show you how a true Master treats his property' might have been blown off if Delia's friends hadn't encouraged her to accept his invitation - all for research of course. The trouble is that she's torn between her desire for Kurt and her sense of propriety. There's also their age difference to consider. Delia's positive she's in over her head with Kurt, but his attentive behavior and sex laden phone calls have her wanting more of him. She's brave enough to accept his challenge and enjoy his tutelage as a Master - until an innocent mistake and the consequences threatens to destroy the trust he's worked so hard to gain.

Cris Anson really impressed me with WHAT SHE NEEDS. This is one of those stories that gets your heart racing and other body parts tingling - and that's just the physical reaction. Kurt's dominant nature is the perfect accompaniment to Delia's curious and open-minded demeanor. I think one of the hottest things about this story is simply the way Kurt talks to Delia. His voice resonates through the pages and had me wanting to call him `Master.' Of course there's conflict - isn't there always? But in this case, it's due to personal issues from Kurt and Delia's past and overcoming them isn't exactly as simple as saying `I'm sorry.' WHAT SHE WANTS is a truly beautiful story with just the right amount of heat, light hearted fun, and emotional angst to deserve a place of honor on your e-reading bookshelf.

About the Author

Richard J. Mouw returned to teaching in the position of Professor of Faith and Public Life after 20 years as president of Fuller Theological Seminary (1993–2013). He is the author of more than 20 books, including Culture and Common Grace, Uncommon Decency: Christian Civility in an Uncivil World, Talking with Mormons: An Invitation to Evangelicals, and, most recently, Adventures in Evangelical Civility: A Lifelong Quest for Common Ground.

Today, Elton would probably describe the audition to the Royal Academy of Music as a daunting proposition for any eleven-year-old to go through, but after showing what he was capable of when it came to playing the piano, an oral test, and convincing his auditioners that he had an ear for music, he was accepted into the Academy, and as far as he was concerned, he was now on the first rung of the ladder to becoming a professional musician.
Helen Piena, his piano tutor at the Academy, recalls that he was offered a Junior Exhibitionist Scholarship even though he couldn't read music, not even a note. He was chosen, says Piena, because he had such a good ear. She taught him the rudiments of playing the piano but not composition, 'I didn't teach him for composition. He had lessons with a composer for that, but I don't know how he was doing in his other classes at the time. I know his compositions were, and still are, classically based, and that was due to his education at the Academy; he learned a lot about music structure whilst he was there.'
As well as practising the piano, he was also in Harmony classes in Room 114. 'I came to the Royal Academy as a junior Saturday morning student in the early sixties,' recalls Skaila Kanga, a fellow student, and a then would-be principal harp player on Elton's second album. 'He used to always sit at the back, out of the way. We were keen and eager, sitting at the front and swotting, but Reg wasn't like that, he was shy and hid away in this very big room, by the window. He remembers me in that class but I don't have a huge amount of recollection of him because he was so very shy. It was quite a tussle for him. He had such a different way of listening to music, and was playing piano mostly by ear, which was, and still is, his incredible skill but which the Academy didn't really engender in those days. It was a much more classical training, and for those students who wanted to go down the classical path, it was invaluable.'
Certainly, he didn't seem to be comfortable doing Mozart and Haydn, continues Kanga. 'And so, therefore, the stricture and all the classes that we had were hard for him.' What he could do, however, was play and improvise on what he could remember, which is a phenomenal thing to do, and vital for the route into rock 'n' roll music.

Elton John must read

I couldn't put this book down. Mr. Hayward has painstakingly researched and interviewed those persons closely involved in the music publishing era of the 60's where a young Reg Dwight would sharpen his craft and begin his rise to super stardom. This book separates the gossip from the fact, and makes sense of a period of time that little is known about. Full of little known factoids, dates, persons and places. A book that needed to be written.

1960s Denmark Street comes alive in Hayward's book!

I want to heartily endorse Keith Hayward's book, "Tin Pan Alley." I'm nearly done reading it, and if you are not only an Elton John fan, but also a fan of music in general, this is a must read. Keith has not only encapsulated the start of Elton and Bernie, but even more has captured an era in music history that will never exist again. His work chronicling the music business scene on Denmark Street, particularly during the 1960s, and how Elton's rise to prominence was inextricably linked to that magical place and time is just astounding in its detail and description. Keith's interviews and research almost plunks you right in the street. You can smell the coffee at the cafes and hear the clamor inside the offices of the publishing companies. You can see the Kinks, Stones, Beatles and Reg Dwight and his companions going in and out of the buildings. You get what it was like to be a struggling group, such as Bluesology, and understand the machinations that led Reg/Elton and Bernie to the music they would start out writing and later the different style of songs they would end up recording. Caleb's insights are particularly noteworthy. Folks, this isn't a glorification book about Elton John. It's a frank, honest look at the state of music in England during one of its most creative and evolutionary periods. Whole chunks of pages go by without any mention of Elton or Bernie whatsoever, but that's as it should be. Hayward has a lot of history to impart, and doesn't flinch or take the easy way out. He put a lot of work into this book and it shows. I for one will never listen to "Bitter Fingers" the same again having read his book. "Those old diehards in Denmark Street start laughing at the keyboard player's hollow, haunted eyes." Wow, it takes on a whole new meaning now. If you haven't already, buy a copy of it today. I can hardly wait for his followup to be released!

Upclose and personal account of British music scene and EJ's role in it, though could benefit from some tighter editing

This book brings together new information from dozens of people involved in the British music business of the 1960's, all of whom, in one way or another, were involved in the rise of Elton John. The book ends in Summer 1970, when Elton came to the US for the first time, and had his breakthrough performance for the fans in... Philadelphia.
This book is about "Tin Pan Alley": it includes in depth introduction to the British music publishing business and its evolution into a recorded music production business. The focus is on Dick James Music. We learn how Reg Dwight found a role in that business.
This book is about "The Rise of Elton John": it gives the most extensive coverage of Reg's development as a musician, songwriter, performer, and recording artist ever published. A particular strength is the coverage of Reg's time with Bluesology; this section of the book is loaded with new details--Mick Inkpen provided a trove of memories and impressions.
Virtually every living person who worked with Elton (aside from Bernie Taupin and Nigel Olsson) from the early 60s through 1970 has input. The emphasis is on the music throughout--and it is fascinating to have all the various early musical efforts of Elton documented in one place.
The book would have benefited from a bit more editing; at times, the timeline is not exactly clear. But, this is a small quibble. A more extensive index, with a list of every song mentioned in the text, is needed--this is a serious omission for a book that, in every way, gives wonderful insight into the early career of Elton John.
Keith Hayward's session at the 2013 Elton Expo in Las Vegas was an absolute highlight of the event. Hayward is a passionate music fan, a dogged researcher and has a distinctive "voice" in his prose.
A "must read" for anyone interested in Elton John and particularly those years leading up to his breakthrough success in 1970.

Excellent Clinical Reference

As a busy clinical otolaryngologist in Lutherville Maryland, who is called upon to render opinions on all manner of oral lesions, I am pleased to finally have a comprehensive reference to make my practice more precise and treatment rendered more effective. This book is very well illustrated and provides an in-depth yet telegraphic approach to the wide range of oral pathology that is encountered in the general clinical practice of ENT. I recommend this well referenced book to all of us in allopathic medicine, who are not extensively trained in benign oral lesions,but are in need of a cogent answer to the question "Hey Doc look at this and tell me what you think it is?". I now have a "go to" reference for this exact need. Mark Williams MD

About the Author

John Tobey received his BA in mathematics from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois, in 1965, his MA in mathematics education from Harvard University in 1966, and his PhD in mathematics education from Boston University in 1980. He has taught in the mathematics department at the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as the Mathematics Department Chairman at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts, for five years. John has served as the president of the New England Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges. He has received the NISOD award for outstanding teaching from the University of Texas at Austin. John is the author of seven mathematics books published by Pearson Education. John has spoken to many mathematics departments and at many professional meetings throughout the country on the topic of developmental mathematics education and distance learning in mathematics. He lives in Massachusetts.

Jeffrey Slater has been a professor at North Shore Community College for thirty-eight years and received the Teacher of the Year award in 2002. Jeff travels around the country speaking on student retention and is also a consultant to the Federal Government. He lives in Lexington, Massachusetts, with his wife Shelley and his yellow lab Gracie.

Jamie Blair has directed the Mathematics Learning Center at Orange Coast College for the past seventeen years. She designed, developed, and implemented the center, and as a result of this effort, has provided technical expertise related to the particulars of the Math Center to numerous other two-year colleges and at many conferences. In 2007, Jamie was appointed to the Team of Basic Skills Specialists by the California State Academic Senate. She is also currently participating on Title 3 committees on her campus. She specializes in teaching students who have never been successful in mathematics. She is an expert in the area of basic skills in relation to the learning needs of students. She lives in California.

Jennifer Crawford received her BS in mathematics from the University of Minnesota–Duluth in 1995 and her MS in mathematics from the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities in 1998. She taught a wide range of courses at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts for five years. She currently teaches at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota, where her focus is working with developmental math students. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with her husband, two young children, and black lab.
