About the Author
Dr. Michelle "Shelley" McGuire teaches in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Washington State University. She is the author of several published articles, and specializes in the research of understanding of how breastfeeding and lactation influence both maternal and child health and well-being. Recent research has focused on investigating how maternal diet influences milk fat content and, thus, energy intake and fatty acid consumption of the breastfeeding child. Dr. McGuire has been teaching the basic nutrition course for several years and has a strong appreciation of the course, its goals and objectives, and the variety of student needs. This experience coupled with her strong writing and research background has helped her create an exciting and refreshing text for the introductory nutrition course.

Dr. Beerman teaches in the School of Biological Sciences at Washington State University. She is the author of several published articles assessing the impact of bioactive components in soy (isoflavones) on health parameters in menopausal women. More recently, she has been studying the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in rural, impoverished regions of Guatemala, and efficacy of a novel approach to improve iron status in women and children. Dr. Beerman teaches the 300-level nutrition course for health-related majors (Nutrition, Health, and Disease), as well as courses related to women's health (Biology of Women). She also teaches a course in teaching methodology (Teaching Methods in Higher Education) for graduate students. Since joining the faculty at Washington State University in 1989, she has taught more than 12,000 students and has been the recipient of several college and university teaching awards. Dr. Beerman's years of teaching experience, combined with her wide knowledge base in nutrition, health sciences and educational pedagogy, has helped create this innovative introductory nutrition text.

Missing booklet?

I just ordered this from Amazon and only got a new copy because most of the used were without the supplemental booklet, which I want. However, I only received a text book, no Table of Food Composition booklet. I leafed through the book and it's not hidden anywhere in here... What am I missing? I would have rather saved ~$20 if nothing else is coming with the text as additional info...

Nice presentation of information; easy to understand and apply. Lots of colorful diagrams and pictures. Love the tear out chapter quizzes in the back (caution if you buy the book used,they might have been ripped out). I did find one error in the quizzes: Chapter 12, question 9-the answer should be "b" and the key has "d". Other than that-love it!

I bought this book for the nutrition class I was taking. I read this text book from cover to cover (not something I can do with most text books). This text book was well written and very interesting.

A Bittersweet exchange of letters

There are some books you never thought you would read and when you do, you are only too glad that you did. There have been plenty of such books in my life. They make an appearance when not known to me at all, I may start reading a while later, however when I do, I wonder why I did not earlier. They leave an impression so vivid that I know I will reread the book. It is almost like food you never liked and somehow it seems to grow on you so much that you relish it. This has happened to me quite lately and the book it happened with is, "The Other Side of the Table" by Madhumita Mukherjee.

I never liked novels written in the form of letters. Somehow it did not work for me at all. I tried reading 86 Charing Cross Road, liked it a little and some more, but just left it at that. There have been other books, on similar lines which I did not love or want to go back to. It is not that I do not like reading letters, however reading them in a book format, more so when fictional, does not cut it for me. So when I received a copy of, "The Other Side of the Table" I found it pretty ordinary, till I started reading it and loving it more so, and that almost changed my perception of this form of story-telling.

"The Other Side of the Table" is about, as it always happens in most books, two people and the letters exchanged by them over a couple of years. Uma and Abhi almost got into my skin while reading this book. I remember watching, "Tumhari Amrita" - one of the first plays I had watched and I fell in love with it. This book also reminded me of it to a very large extent. Uma and Abhi are childhood friends. It is surprising that they are childhood friends considering Uma is younger by 10 years and yet that does not matter. The letters are written from 1990 to 1999 and reflect almost everything about those years. Abhi is a surgeon in London. Uma is studying medicine in Calcutta. That in short is the premise of the story.

Why did I love this book compared to the others? I loved the way it was written. At no point, as a reader was I bored and at the same time, I did not feel that the book was way too sentimental, given what happens later (which I will not reveal). The writing is easy and does not veer into medical terms (which it could have) that the reader might not understand. There are issues mentioned in the book like women's rights (to some extent) and yet it is done in a subtle and understated manner.

The book also reminded me of "One Day" by David Nicholls in a very good way and I loved the way I could connect with several other reads in the past due to this one read. Off late, I have started reading a lot of Indian fiction and it is suiting me just fine.

"The Other Side of the Table" is a bittersweet read, somewhat like life. I would definitely recommend this to everyone. A read that will for sure leave you with a smile on your face and maybe that is most required in times such as these.

Too complex

While marketing is a complex subject, the authors are so caught up in the sounds of their academic prose. It assumes you remember concepts from previous chapters and does not do a good job of explaining important marketing concepts.

It is very dry reading. The case studies are old even as of the print date.

This book is so complex, that it is the first text book I have read that requires you to read all the side bar information.

Unfortunately this book was chosen by a professor who is no longer teaching the class in my school's MBA program. The new teacher also feels the text book is way too complex to get much out of it. I expect material to be something I can understand, not "geek" speak!

Waste of time and money

I had to purchase this book for my marketing strategy course in business school. It is not practical. you can read pages and pages but learn nothing simply because it doesnt teach anything. It doesnt teach anything about theories as well. For example many pages are written about importance of segmentation but doesnt say what is the best strategy for segmentation.
It is waste of money.

Good reference textbook, not easy to read.

I purchased this book for my Customer and Competitive advantage class. I was able to save money by buying this paperback international edition. It is the same as the hardback one that my classmates purchased. This is not a book that you can read cover-to-cover. It has a good index that makes searching easier. The cases studies are outdated but it makes a good reference text.
