About the Author
Dr. Christopher P. Neck is currently an Associate Professor of Management at Arizona State University, where he held the title “University Master Teacher.” From 1994 to 2009, he was part of the Pamplin College of Business faculty at Virginia Tech. He received his PhD in Management from Arizona State University and his MBA from Louisiana State University. Neck is author of the books Self-Leadership: The Definitive Guide to Personal Excellence (2016, Sage); Fit To Lead: The Proven 8-week Solution for Shaping Up Your Body, Your Mind, and Your Career (2004, St. Martin’s Press; 2012, Carpenter’s Sons Publishing); Mastering Self-Leadership: Empowering Yourself for Personal Excellence, 6th edition (2013, Pearson); The Wisdom of Solomon at Work (2001, Berrett-Koehler); For Team Members Only: Making Your Workplace Team Productive and Hassle-Free (1997, Amacom Books); and Medicine for the Mind: Healing Words to Help You Soar, 4th Edition (Wiley, 2012). Neck is also the coauthor of the principles of management textbook, Management: A Balanced Approach to the 21st Century (Wiley 2013; 2017, 2nd Edition); the upcoming introductory to entrepreneurship textbook, Entrepreneurship, (Sage, 2017); and the introductory to organizational behavior textbook, Organizational Behavior (Sage, 2016).

Dr. Neck’s research specialties include employee/executive fitness, self-leadership, leadership, group decision-making processes, and self-managing teams. He has over 100 publications in the form of books, chapters, and articles in various journals. Some of the outlets in which Neck’s work has appeared include Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, The Journal of Organizational Behavior, The Academy of Management Executive, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, The Journal of Managerial Psychology, Executive Excellence, Human Relations, Human Resource Development Quarterly, Journal of Leadership Studies, Educational Leadership, and The Commercial Law Journal.

Due to Neck’s expertise in management, he has been cited in numerous national publications, including The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Houston Chronicle, and the Chicago Tribune. Additionally, each semester Neck teaches an introductory management course to a single class of anywhere from 500 to 1,000 students.

Dr. Neck was the recipient of the 2007 Business Week Favorite Professor Award.” He is featured on www.businessweek.com as one of the approximately twenty professors from across the world receiving this award.

Neck currently teaches a mega section of Management Principles to approximately 500 students at Arizona State University. Neck received the Order of Omega Outstanding Teaching Award for 2012. This award is awarded to one professor at Arizona State by the Alpha Lamda Chapter of this leadership fraternity. His class sizes at Virginia Tech filled rooms up to 2,500 students. He received numerous teaching awards during his tenure at Virginia Tech, including the 2002 Wine Award for Teaching Excellence. Also, Neck was the ten-time winner (1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009) of the “Students’ Choice Teacher of The Year Award” (voted by the students for the best teacher of the year within the entire university). Also, some of the organizations that have participated in Neck’s management development training include GE/Toshiba, Busch Gardens, Clark Construction, the United States Army, Crestar, American Family Insurance, Sales and Marketing Executives International, American Airlines, American Electric Power, W. L. Gore & Associates, Dillard’s Department Stores, and Prudential Life Insurance. Neck is also an avid runner. He has completed 12 marathons, including the Boston Marathon, the New York City Marathon, and the San Diego Marathon. In fact, his personal record for a single long distance run is a 40-mile run.

Charles C. Manz, Ph.D. is a�speaker, consultant, and bestselling author of over 200 articles and scholarly papers and more than 20 books including Mastering Self-Leadership, 6th ed.; The New SuperLeadership; Share, Don’t Take the Lead; The Power of Failure; Fit to Lead; Business Without Bosses; The Leadership Wisdom of Jesus, 3rd ed.; Foreword Magazine best book-of-the-year Gold Award winner Emotional Discipline; Stybel-Peabody National Book prize winning SuperLeadership, and the forthcoming Self-Leadership: The Definitive Guide to Personal Excellence. He is the Nirenberg Chaired Professor of Leadership in the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Dr. Jeffery D. Houghton completed his PhD in management at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and is currently an associate professor of management at West Virginia University (WVU). Dr. Houghton has taught college-level business courses at Virginia Tech, Abilene Christian University (Texas), Lipscomb University (Tennessee), The International University (Vienna, Austria), and for the US Justice Department-Federal Bureau of Prisons. Prior to pursuing a full-time career in academics, he worked in the banking industry as a loan officer and branch manager.

A member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Dr. Houghton’s research specialties include human behavior, motivation, personality, leadership, and self-leadership. He has published more than 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and his work has been cited more than 1,600 times in academic journals. He currently teaches undergraduate-, master’s-, and doctoral-level courses in management, organizational behavior, and leadership. Dr. Houghton was named the 2013 Beta Gamma Sigma Professor of the Year for the WVU College of Business and Economics, awarded annually to one faculty member within the college as selected by a vote of the student members of Beta Gamma Sigma; and he received the 2008 Outstanding Teaching Award for the WVU College of Business and Economics, awarded annually to one faculty member for outstanding teaching.

In addition to his research and teaching activities, Dr. Houghton has consulted and conducted training seminars for companies including the Federal Bureau of Investigations, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, and the Bruce Hardwood Floors Company. In his spare time, Dr. Houghton enjoys traveling, classic mystery novels, racquetball, and snow skiing. Finally, Dr. Houghton has trained for and completed two marathons, the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC, and the Dallas White Rock Marathon in Dallas, Texas.

A Guide For Prayer

I haven't finished reading this book yet, but I'm half way done and so far this is a really good book to read. I was struggling with prayer meaning I was having a hard time communicating with God. Every time I would try to get down on my knees and pray I would be distracted, I couldn't stay focus and at times I didn't know what to even say. Sometimes I watch Dr. Charles Stanley programs and that's how I found out about the book. At the time it seemed like the perfect book to help me get where I needed to be in my prayer life and I was right. If you are someone struggling with prayer this maybe a great guide for you. After that just let your heart and love for Christ be your motivation for having a relationship with the Father. I think even those who are strong in their faith can learn something from this book. It is very encouraging and filled with the truth. Only a man who is truly gifted would be able to deliver such strong and passionate words the way that Dr. Charles Stanley did in this book.

I loved this book and how easy to understand Dr. Stanley made the subject of prayer. His writing style is what makes this book a great study book on talking with the Lord. I gave this book 5/5 stars. I liked how the book gave practical steps to growing in your relationship with the Lord through prayer. I really liked how much he talked about how the Lord wants to talk with us. You will feel so loved and accepted by the Lord after reading this book. Your desire to pray will also grow immensely as you learn how easy it is to talk to the Lord and how much He wants you to talk with Him. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires a better prayer life or who needs to be reminded how important prayer is!

I would like to thank the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

Very brief, and a shade more content than the web tutorial

While there is some good content in this book, it is extremely brief. To make matters worse, majority of the content is the same as the first 5/6 steps of the tutorial on the rabbitmq website. There are a handful of good points, but I would have preferred more detail as to why certain recommendations were made and how better to utilize rabbitmq (as opposed to a list of queue types and tutorial implementations). I am still in shock how short this book was.

If you want a brief overview and a brief narrative of the first 5 examples on the rabbitmq website, then this book might be for you. However, in my opinion there is not nearly enough content in this book to warrant the $10 I spent. Knowing what I know about this book now, I'd have a hard time paying more than $2-3.

A good read with easy to follow example code

I was sent a copy of this book for review, and I'm glad I was. I like this book. I didn't know anything about RabbitMQ before picking the book up and little about Node.js which is used for all the example code. I was keen to learn about RabbitMQ though, knowing that it's used in my favourite IaaS platform: OpenStack.

I think that the sub-title of the book "Build scalable message-based applications with RabbitMQ" should mention that this is "with RabbitMQ and Node.js".

This is a short book, part of PacktPubs "INSTANT" series, "Short Fast Focused" as they say on the book. It's about 40 pages long.

I like this book because without any knowledge either of RabbitMQ or Node.js I found the examples to be easy to follow and the code easy to read. All the example code is available from PacktPub's web site - if you've registered the book - or from github.

The first section describes the explains why RabbitMQ exists abstracting away the problems of scalability, reponsiveness, availability etc allowing you to get on with your application able to take the low-level messaging for granted followed by how to install RabbitMQ and the amqp module needed for Node.js.

The body of the book is a series of exercises starting with a simple "Hello World" exchange between a Producer and a Consumer, gradually becoming more complicated with examples of Work Queues, Persistent Messages, Acknowledgements, Publisher Confirms, Publish Subscrube and Complex Routing. These examples are incremental developments all part of an online store application.
The incremental nature really helps to follow the examples.

The complex routing example explains how to decouple the application further routing different types of messages to multiple queues.

The final section "Go Forth and Multiply" (rabbits again!) talks about more advanced issues which are not covered in detail here, but links are provided to relevant information on Clustering and Mirroring, Error handling and Recovery, AMQP connections (being resource limited), Heartbeats, Reconnects etc. These are real world issues for serious deployments that are acknowledged if not treated in detail.

This section finishes with a list of useful Architecture and Performance hints.

Overall this is a very good book for an introduction to RabbtiMQ. Although Node.js is used throughout all that's needed is a simple understanding of java scripts and javascripts manner of handling functions. A nice concise read presenting the concepts in an easy incremental manner with good working example code.

Brief and to the point

I was invited by Packt Publishing to read and review the book, as a part of their instant series.

As in other installments, the idea is to start with the simplest scenarios quickly covering intermediate and advanced scenarios at the end of the book. I personally think the book complements the tutorials on offer on the rabbitMQ site, going a bit beyond than the ground covered by these, and with the twist of using javascript (node.js) for everything, as opposed to the python and java tutorials in the official web site.

The book starts the same way as the tutorials, with the Hello World and Work Queues chapters, but then goes on to expand and demonstrate, persistent messages, acks, patterns such as publisher confirms and publish / subscribe, the finishing off with a routing example and some quick performance tips. Not bad considering that real content pagecount is around 40 pages.

If you've never worked with rabbitMQ or used to work only with old MQ products of yore of IBM and the likes, this is a good introduction. Obviously the page count means you cannot expect to have any deep dive on any topic, but then that's clear in the title. I think the book does it job of getting you started on the most common patternsa and how to get them running. Then you need, of course, to evolve them to fit your specific scenarios.
