Disappointing...

Holmesians are well aware that the ending of "A Scandal in Bohemia" is highly unsatisfactory for both Holmes and the King of Bohemia, whom Irene Adler, his former lover, is in an excellent position to blackmail. In his latest Holmes pastiche, John Hall takes this situation up again about a year after the events of "Scandal." Irene Norton says she needs to consult Holmes, but vanishes on the way to 221B Baker Street. Apparently kidnapped and left to die, Norton is rescued by Holmes and Watson... but her account of the new situation that threatens the King and herself is highly unsatisfactory and probably pretty close to an outright lie. Instead of refusing to take the case, as Conan Doyle's consulting detective always did when faced with a client who refused to explain the real situation, Holmes and Watson wind up in Bohemia in what is pretty certain to be a wild-goose chase, and both Holmes and Watson bumble in some pretty inexplicable ways, with Watson coming perilously close to being a comical sidekick more than once. The quest to recover the famous letters and photo supposedly stolen from Irene Norton succeeds with ridiculous ease, considering the planless, gormless, painfully unintelligent approaches adopted by Holmes. And then the fact that Mrs. Norton lied suddenly assumes deadly importance.
With the situation treated rather lightly by the author throughout, it was a jarring and unwelcome twist for this elderly and jaded reader when the adventure ended with the very abrupt deaths of five characters (two offstage), over only two pages, with one of the deceased certainly an innocent bystander!
Not one of Hall's better efforts, this goes on the bottom of the stack with TRAVELS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES. It gets three stars only because of the fine period writing style in which the improbable adventure is recounted.

This volume was another great edition to the Otomen Series and I am looking forward to seeing what happens next. In this volume Asuka's mother starts to interfere more with the lives of all his close friends, I hope that everything works out for them and that they can find a way to overcome the problems she is creating for them.

This series is drawing to a close soon, along with several other Shojo Beat titles, surprisingly. Several of them didn’t feel like the end was near, but I definitely don’t mind. This series does need a conclusion soon, and I’m looking forward to the main plots being concluded, but I still wasn’t really expecting it.

Asuka’s mom is, like, psychotic, you guys. She feels so strongly against boys doing girly things, it’s ridiculous. And now she’s watching her son closely, wanting to sabotage him. She needs to knock it off, get some sense put into her. I’m looking forward to that confrontation.

Aside from that, there was the rest of the Yamato plot line, then one where the group stars in an ad-lib play. Something big happens with Juta at the end, and that should cause some problems.

I think the shining star in this story is Asuka and Ryo’s relationship. They’re just so sweet and cute together, so secure in their relationships and mature about it. I enjoy relationship drama, but this is very nice to see as well. And I’m honestly starting to wonder if those two are ever going to kiss, or do anything overtly romantic. Hopefully something will happen by the end of the series, since there are only two books left.

This isn’t a series that really sticks out, it’s not high in drama or dark material or anything. It’s very lighthearted and sweet. But that’s nice, too, going into it expecting light and fluffy, drama over little things that get fixed easily, a very sweet read. I’m enjoying it.

About the Author
Annette Childs holds a Ph.D. in psychology and maintains a private practice assisting individuals and families to grow through painful transitions. Halfway Across the River

Halfway Across the River is a beautifully written book with stories about the terminally ill transitioning into and accepting death. It's about loved ones left behind and occurrences of communication from "the other side". Woven into the book is the loving story of Margaret and Don. Don is skeptical about feeling Margaret's persistent presence after her death, but there are some events that can't be explained away. Halfway Across the River leaves one with hope that our loved ones are present in a spiritual way. This book is not morose but rather offers some real life touching stories about death and the loved ones left behind. It's a light read that is not just for those dealing with death and dying, it's an engaging book filled with real accounts of events that unfolded for Annette and her work with hospice.

Halfway Across the River

Whether you are facing serious illness and possibly death or know someone who is, this book will help you to find comfort and peace. You will also come to know an amazing woman, Margaret Borwhat, and the legacies she has left behind. Dr. Childs' writing makes you feel like you know the people she introduces personally which helps you to believe events described even though some of them can seem unbelievable.

A wonderful book

Annette covers a difficult topic and makes it easier for those going through this process to have some comfort and a form of closure knowing that there will be continuance of the "being." One has to be open or receptive to the events that occur in life to be aware of what is actually occurring around us or the messages just simply go un-noticed. This book has become a permanent part of my bookshelf and I have recommended it to two very close friends that are going through a similiar life changing crisis. I encourage everyone to read this book at least one time and watch the world change around you.
