Starts out great; Ends abruptly; Not a stand alone book

I don't like leaving reviews since literature can be subjective and the author clearly spent a great deal of time and energy on the work. However, this book is not on par with the first in the series.

It starts out great; Kate is a very likable heroine and the dialogue between her and Nick is quick and delightful. About half way through she turns into a one dimensional character who is indistinguishable from the previous three heroines in the series.

Further, the author spends a significant amount of pages introducing interesting secondary characters only to have them disappear.

There is no real obstacle to Nick and Kate being together, although the author tried several. The author throws several ideas out there only to have them resolved within several pages. The final obstacle is literally introduced and resolved within three pages. And then they are madly in love. It seems as though the original story idea and final version changed about half way through the book.

Finally, and most annoyingly, there is no resolution to the main story line. The story will conclude in the next installment. In fact, the last three or four chapters feature the next couple more than the current.

The book ends so abruptly that I had to check the table of contents to make sure I was not missing a chapter. The characters are planning their next step, set out to execute, and bam story over.

All that being said, I will read the next book in the series because I hate an unfinished story.

I loved it, in fact this book is my favorite of the Emerson series, so far. I loved Nick and Kate. they were truly soul mates. I loved the family love and companionship presented in this book. I can't wait to read the continuation of this story in Maureen's next book. I think Nate and Rose will be just as enjoyable as Nick and Kate. Thanks again Maureen for a delightful book!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a great love story, and loves to laugh and cry for the hero and heroin. This is a very great series, as well as the the Kellington series. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

A good tool for beginning art teachers

As a beginning art educator I found this book to be extremely useful. It contains many tips for art room materials and practices that could only be learned through years of experience. Not only does Peggy Davison cover the very practical side of art education but also she explains many of the latest philosophies and strategies used in this area without the book becoming tedious reading. Any art educator, regular classroom teacher, or home-schooling parent would be wise to read this book if they are serious about the quality and efficiency of their art program. It is an easy and interesting read and one that will be referred to many times for information. This is a book I will keep handy in my classroom.

The first and most exhaustive work of its kind devoted entirely to the subject, Large Eddy Simulation presents a comprehensive account and a unified view of this young but very rich discipline. LES is the only efficient technique for approaching high Reynolds numbers when simulating industrial, natural or experimental configurations. The author concentrates on incompressible fluids and chooses his topics in treating with care both the mathematical ideas and their applications. The book addresses researchers as well as graduate students and engineers. The second edition was a greatly enriched version motivated both by the increasing theoretical interest in LES and the increasing number of applications. Two entirely new chapters were devoted to the coupling of LES with multiresolution multidomain techniques and to the new hybrid approaches that relate the LES procedures to the classical statistical methods based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations.

This 3rd edition adds various sections to the text such as a careful error analysis of filtered density function models and multiscale models. It also contains two new chapters dealing with the mathematical representations of LES and the prediction of active and passive scalar dynamics, which are of considerable interest for engineering and geophysical modeling. The part on geophysical flow has much to offer on a critical current issue.

The author presents all relevant subgrid scale models, the theoretical basis of the method, lessons from practical cases, etc

It is no accident that this is the 3rd revision in 4 years, collecting forewords from leading theoreticians along the way: Germano, Lesieur and Meneveau.

Definitely one of the better instruction books.

I have bought many guitar books, CDs, DVDs, etc. like many of you. Most are well-done but just have limited usefulness or appeal. This book is very professionally done, and about the only book that I have worked through each lesson. It's put together almost like a textbook, small, hardcover and spiralbound. It contains 29 focused lessons with explanations, full-color photographs, chord listing, music notation and tab, playing tips, and general guitar information. It has country, blues, and latin rhythms, etc. It also teaches songs like Scarborough Fair and Morning Has Broken. It has 30 picking patterns listed, which is why I really bought the book. It contains a CD for the lessons, and the only criticism I have is that the picking patterns are not played on the CD. I would have liked to hear what they sound like, but I can still pick through them. But everything else is top-rate so I am giving it a five.

Good beginners book!

I've been playing guitar on and off for the last 25 years. One of my biggest passions, and one I fail at consistently is learning how to play fingerstyle guitar. I have many, many books on fingerstyle techniques. This is one of the better ones. Each lesson is nice and short which helps avoid burnout while trying to learn a longer piece.

The book progresses from single quarter notes played with your thumb up to more advanced pieces like Scarborough Fair.

The included CD is fantastic as it allows you to play along with the lessons.

I've only had this book for about a week but I love it and would recommend it to anyone who struggles with fingerstyle guitar and wants a good place to start.

Great book for content. Supersmall print. I had to pick the book up and hold it inches from my face. Try to memorize all the information and play each exercise that way, as the book cannot be read while holding the guitar. It's supersmall print. I wish this same book came in regular music book size.

Excellent standard textbook

I have used this textbook for 5 years for my marketing diploma students. The book has proved itself in South Africa and used by hundreds of students with success. My only wish is that the authors change the attiutude measurement section and add clearer examples.

Fickleness of Consumer Behavior Defined and Described

The textbook used in my Graduate Diploma in Marketing course, it gave me great insights in the fields of Consumer Behavior. I especially enjoyed the many interesting ads used throughout the text to illustrate certain learning points. Very readable.

About the Author

Richard Guare, PhD, is a neuropsychologist and director of the Center for Learning and Attention Disorders. His research and publications focus on understanding and treatment of learning and attention difficulties and neurological disorders. He is board certified as a behavior analyst, and he frequently serves as a consultant for schools and agencies. He has coauthored several books, including, with Peg Dawson, EdD, Coaching Students with Executive Skills Deficits and Executive Skills in Children and Adolescents, among others.

Peg Dawson, EdD, is a staff psychologist at the Center for Learning and Attention Disorders in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She is a past president of both the National Association of School Psychologists and the International School Psychology Association. She is a recipient of the National Association of School Psychologists' Lifetime Achievement Award and has coauthored several books, including, with Richard Guare, PhD, Coaching Students with Executive Skills Deficits and Executive Skills in Children and Adolescents, among others.

Colin Guare, a freelance writer who grew up with an attention disorder, has contributed to ADDitude magazine and has worked with children with learning disorders.

Abby Craden has been a professional actress and voice artist for over sixteen years and can be heard in numerous television and radio commercials, video games, and audiobooks. She has twice won the AudioFile Earphones Award.

Excellent look at the unusual child

I have a kid who's gifted & in gifted classes. Understands high level concepts, but can't figure out how to organize his locker or manage to turn in his homework - even though he's completed it. It's been bandied about maybe he has autism or ADD, but those didn't fit. This book describes him to a T. Not having the frontal lobe of his brain maturing at the same rate as his peers is a simple, logical explanation & the ensuing ways to deal are enlightening & helpful. This book was a god-send. It was suggested by his gifted teacher after she spent time with him.

Excellent resource for parents of teens with ADHD or ADD

As a clinical psychologist I regard this as one of the best resources for parents of teens. This helps parents to look at the teen with ADHD as having some executive skills impairments that need remediation and understanding. Parents also rate their own executive skills and can try to be a better fit in parenting these adolescents. There are many constructive suggestions in this book and I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Paul Theroux was born in Medford, Massachusetts in 1941. He has written many works of fiction and travel writing, including The Last Train to Zona Verde, Dark Star Safari, Ghost Train to the Eastern Star, Riding the Iron Rooster, The Great Railway Bazaar, The Elephanta Suite, A Dead Hand, The Tao of Travel and The Lower River. The Mosquito Coast and Dr Slaughter have both been made into successful films. Paul Theroux divides his time between Cape Cod and the Hawaiian islands. His most recent work is Deep South, which is published by Hamish Hamilton.

Wild romp, but still just a collection of Singapore-based short stories

I read one of Theroux's recent train books, Eastern Star something, and found it crotchety and misinformed. But this book I have long wanted to read for a few reasons - it is one of the few novels to be set in Singapore, where it is notorious, as is Theroux himself. Theroux also lived here for many years in the early seventies, so chances were high that it would be less misinformed (his chapter on Singapore in Ghost Train To The Eastern Star seemed also to be the less misinformed chapter of that book as well.

Saint Jack is a peculiar book, as it's all about the character development of our handsome young pimp/saint, recounting various anecdotes in this man's life that reveal something about his character. He is 53 when we catch up to him in Singapore after 13 years of living there, and slowly we piece together how he came to be in Singapore. Through his colourful descriptions of Jack's pimping, we get the sense that Theroux spent a lot of his time in Singapore doing research for the book itself. There is no plot to the book, despite what my Penguin classic says on the back about "the faintly sinister American Edwin Shuck" engaging him to set up some blackmail on a US Army general. That only occupies the final 20 pages of the book, and really isn't any more indicative of anything in it than any random selection of 20 pages throughout the rest of the book would be. We hear Jack explain Singapore, we see him explore Singapore, we see him drink with his friends in a pub, we see him open his own pub, run afoul of the local gangs, we see him deal with "the new fella" at his company, his local employers, the ships, the girls, the gangs, and the police.

Good fun, with some bad jokes thrown in. Love it! Now I want to see the movie - that was directed by Peter Bogdanovich, but banned for many years in Singapore because of some controversy swirling around it.

Good but Not Great

Having read all of Theroux's travel books (besides The Tao of travel, a volume he mainly compiled), I am now making my way through his novels. I would classify this one, Saint Jack, as just fair. Though better than his debut, Waldo, it is nowhere near his My Secret History. Saint Jack is an early Theroux effort and unfortunately it shows.

The creativity is still there. Theroux worked in Singapore as an English teacher, not a ship chandler's assistant, like his protagonist, Jack Flowers, and the underworld the writer creates, though certainly informed by observation and based in reality, is fictional. Saint Jack does have its moments, however. Some of the paragraphs shine and occasionally the scenery and atmosphere of Singapore and the places Flowers frequents come to life. Theroux's cleverness shines, but the story and the writing are choppy. Stylistically, Theroux is still working things out. The punctuation is a giveaway. There are lots of colons and semi-colons - too many for non-fiction, and absent in his later stuff. In short, the novel offers glimpses of brilliance, but doesn't quite come off. Nevertheless, it is an okay read. Jack is a memorable character, for instance, and the bit about him getting nabbed and tattooed by Chinese gangsters is classic. Theroux is a talented enough writer that even his earlier stuff, though perhaps not great, is still good. I look forward to reading his The Mosquito Coast and The Lower River.
