A Polished Writer

This is another satisfying novel from Schieber offering the right balance of mystery and believability. The generational impact of maternal mental illness is explored gently and with humor. These are real, ordinary people who you might actually know. Her characters are vivid. The nuances and emotions between mothers and daughters, husbands and wives are so beautifully captured through Schieber's clear and controlled writing. As in her first novel, WILLING SPIRITS, I laughed and cried with self-recognition. She knows women. Schieber is a shining star on the rise in literary fiction. She really nailed it with THE MANICURIST.

Absorbing, smart fiction

This is the best novel I've read in years. I've read Phyllis Schieber's previous novels, and I guess that makes me a huge fan of her work. Buy this book if you are interested in complex, compelling characters and a story that has deep meaning for us all.

Annoying Dialogue and Typos

I don't know how it got so many great reviews, either. The many typos were distracting, and the dialogue was stiff and unnatural. I still don't know if her husband was warm and loving or critical and unfeeling. I really wanted to enjoy this book because the plot was appealing, but I found it tedious to read.

The spark of inspiration behind The Spark came when Glenn Gaesser looked at the exercise recommendations he and his fellow exercise scientists at the American College of Sports Medicine had come up with: 20 to 60 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise, three to five times a week; two to three strength-training sessions a week; and two to three flexibility workouts a week.

That's the recommendation for the "average" person.

No wonder the population keeps getting fatter, Gaesser thought. Other than athletes, models, fitness professionals, and a handful of gym rats, who had time for all that? The people without the time--the vast majority of the unexercised population--couldn't see the point of doing anything less. Armed with some intriguing research showing that three 10-minute aerobic exercise sessions in a day produced equivalent benefits to one 30-minute workout, Gaesser tried something radical: a workout program consisting of 15 10-minute bursts, or sparks, of exercise. He tried this on a sedentary group of women and found that in three weeks they lost weight; lowered their cholesterol and triglycerides; and improved their aerobic fitness, flexibility, strength, and muscular endurance. In other words, in just three weeks, these women achieved results normally seen in three months of an exercise program.

Why do these 10-minute sparks work so much faster than traditional exercise programs? Partly because of growth hormone, an important muscle-building and fat-mobilizing chemical your body releases during and after exercise. If you get three daily surges of growth hormone, you get triple the benefits of one daily surge.

Besides showing how to get off the couch and start sparking, Gaesser includes nutritional recommendations. He's a rarity today: a high-carbohydrate advocate. (He cites a University of Pittsburgh study showing that people of all ages who've lost weight and successfully kept it off followed high-carb diets.) But there's one catch: the carbohydrates must contain a lot of fiber; another study he mentions shows that people gain weight on low-fat, low-fiber diets.

The Spark is a miracle pill for entry-level exercisers, or those who've been inactive for a while. You can get started in exercise without turning over your life to your program, and continue to use sparks your entire life--which will be much longer and healthier as a result of the simple 10-minute bursts of effort. --Lou Schuler

In 1999, with funding from the American Heart Association, Gaesser (exercise physiology, Univ. of Virginia) conducted the first "Spark" study, designed to determine if many short bursts of exercise would have the same health and fitness benefits as the standard 30-40 minutes, three-times-a-week routine. The study followed 40 ordinary people for three weeks on a regimen of 15 ten-minute exercise units per week. The exercises included walking, weightlifting, stretching, and aerobic dancing. Three weeks later the participants' aerobic capacity had increased by an average of ten to 15 percent. Strength and muscular endurance improved by 40-100 percent. Weight had dropped by an average of three pounds. This means that we don't necessarily have to work up a sweat or dance till we drop to get fit. Dougherty augments Gaesser's description of the process with her own progress under Spark, as a woman who had tried all the diets and the exercise crazes without success. Although it's early to say if the Spark program produces long-term health benefits, this system will certainly appeal to those whose exercise time is limited. The SPARK

As an overweight, stressed-out, 40-something professional, I am thrilled to find this book! The SPARK is exactly what I needed to get my body moving again. I am one of those who had fallen for the 1-hour a day exercise trap, and if I didn't have an hour, which I usually don't, I just didn't exercise. I love doing my three to four SPARKS a day, knowing I am doing my body far more good than waiting for that elusive day when I can fit in 45 minutes or more for my workout. This is a wonderful concept, and so doable! It's working!! Thank you!

Very interesting idea, but not enough for an entire book

I read about this book in a review and related exercise plan in Fitness magazine, so I bought the book. Turns out all I needed to know was in that magazine article. The ideas in this book are great - it's a very easy to follow program for someone who is sedentary or hasn't worked out in ages. However, for someone who is used to working out for 20-60 minutes per session, it's hard for me to believe that only 10 minutes two to three times per day will do the trick. And I found it more difficult to find three ten-minute chunks of time than a single 60 minute time block during the day (you're supposed to space of the 10-minute sparks by a few hours), so this book wasn't good for my schedule. I like the diet advice - the changes the author suggests are to made VERY gradually w/o altering your present diet too much.

Estleman's 2nd Holmes Pastiche

On the heels of "Sherlock Holmes vs. Dracula" came this second pastiche, in which Holmes & Watson battle R.L. Stevenson's legendary doctor/monster duo. Stevenson has a cameo at the end, and the whole affair is a well-done, gripping adventure in the true Conan Doyle spirit.

The title of this,Estleman's second Holmes pastiche,pretty much tells you what to expect .The Stevenson classic is sufficiently well known to have coined a term ,"Jekyll and Hyde personality",that even non-readers are familiar with and thus we get no suprises in the outcome of the novel.Readers will know the true identity of the evil Edward Hyde and the pleasure to be derived from this book is in how the great detective finds the truth and the adventures he and the redoubtable Watson go through en route to the satisfying conclusion in the laboratory of the good Dr Jekyll
The book has pace and the Hansom cab chase in chapter 11 in particular is a model of crisp narrative leavened with neat touches of humour There is even a bar room brawl to keep the plot stirring merrrily
The affection for Doyle and Stevenson is evident and the book is a thoroughly satisfying page turner with enough nous not to outstay its welcome at a tad under 200 pages
Read it if you like Holmes,good Victorian thrillers or just like having fun with a lively tale

In the spirit of both Stevenson and Conan Doyle

This is one of the best "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" follow-up books I've ever read. It really catches the spirit of Old Victorian London, and the storyline is most of the times credible. Even though you know the ending and you know Dr Jekyll's secret, this book still manages to be exciting, and it is very well-written indeed. The only argument is, when you know the original "Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" well, many of the facts in this book are alredy known to you, and it's a bit boring to read them all over again. But still, a very good book, and I recommend it to Holmes and Jekyll fans alike.

About the Author
Dr. Saurav K. He has taught at the Graduate School of Management, Rutgers University, and at Zicklin College of Business, Baruch College, New York. He holds a Bachelor of Technology Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (Bombay) and a Ph. D. in Accounting from the University of Kansas.

His research interests are in applying statistical and analytic methodology to accounting and auditing problems, and his current work involves analyzing problems in financial reporting, as well as studying the accounting aspects of corporate sustainability initiatives. He has published over 25 research papers in academic journals, including Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory; Journal of Accounting, Auditing, and Finance; Journal of Accounting and Public Policy; Issues in Accounting Education; Journal of Cost Management; Journal of Corporate Accounting and Finance; International Journal of Technology Management; The Quality Management Journal; Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management; Strategic Finance; and others. Dr. Dutta has presented his research findings at numerous national and international academic conferences and has conducted research seminars at many universities including, Harvard, Oxford, New York University, Rutgers, University of Southern California, Michigan State, Bentley, and Maastricht. He has conducted professional teaching and training seminars at Dai-Ichi-Kangyo Bank, Merrill Lynch, Prudential Insurance Company, and KPMG LLP. He has been invited by the AICPA to conduct workshops on the use of statistics in forensic accounting, and he has also been the “Featured Speaker” for the Corporate Director’s Group.

Dr. Dutta has been engaged to design and analyze statistical tests on numerous accounting/litigation projects under the jurisdiction of the New York State Attorney General’s Office, U.S. District Court of the Southern District of New York, and the Securities and Exchange Commission, among others. Some of these engagements involved designing statistical procedures to verify claims for settlements of amounts ranging from $500 million to $6.1 billion and include the settlements for MCI-WorldCom, Global Crossing, Cendant Corp, and HealthSouth. He was involved with the reparations of more than 400 million�CHF from the Swiss banks, under the purview of the U.S. District Court of Eastern New York. He has also been engaged to evaluate accounting systems related to hedge accounting, fair value accounting, and mergers and acquisition. Since 2006 he has served as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the IMA in their preparation and updating of the CMA examination study guide.

Good book with some serious questions

As a forensic accountant conducting research in the discipline, I found this book to be very-well written in a fluid and communicative style. However, there are passages that failed to address the topic as clearly as would be expected from a scholar of the author's stature. For instance, the author conflates dependent and independent variables in the discussions on pages 235-236. More focused editing could have fixed this problem.

For a text on forensic accounting, one would expect a more comprehensive review of the various approaches currently garnering attention in this emergent discipline. In fact, the text does not even mention the application of Benford's law although it is used overwhelmingly in auditing circles. There are others, some of which are just fashionably summarized. This book is more an auditing tome that is couched in forensic accounting language, and liberally garnished with statistics to enhance the taste. The author provides a very good coverage of sample size estimation and Baye's Rule. Simply, this book is 250 pages too thin!

It amazes me the things God has hid in language, numbers and creation itself. The God Code is an excellent book for those wishing to learn that God is sovereign as well as loving. I would not doubt if God has even numbered every atom, quark, and particle. GET THIS BOOK a must read !! King David once said, Lord truly thou are a God that hides himself. Well it looks to me like God is giving us a glimse of things to come. I think hide and seek are almost over, which also means if God is revealing and allowing hidden things to be seen and undestood, then he must be about to do something very new in the world. This proves that the Holy Spirit is the Author of the Bible!

If you want more understanding as you read the Bible, read this book. This book proves that God is the Master Mathematician and we're not. Actually, I'm not any good at math at all, but I understand the basic concept Harrison is writing about. As a matter of fact, its easy to do this stuff yourself. For example: In Chapter 8 I read that "153" is Jesus' celestial number, so I found out on my own that the word "lamb(s)" is in the Old Testament 153 times (Jesus is the "Lamb" of God that takes the sin away from the world)! Also, regarding the 144,000 Jews that will be saved after the rapture, I counted Jerusalem in the New Testament and its in there 144 times! I love this book! Go for it - you can find your own pieces of the "God" puzzle as I have. God is letting us in on so many things. Don't miss out!

Excellent, easy-to-follow and kind techniques

I have a rescued dog that is nuts-aggressive on a leash. I have read sooooo many dog training/behavior books, and this one is one of the best. Why? 1) It gets right to the point. 2) There are only 3 main techniques to remember and practice (plus a few "panic button" tactics). 3) It's fewer than 60 pages.

This book is easy to understand and doesn't muddy the issues with a lot of extra stuff. The techniques are non-violent but work. I've been through several dog trainers that told me that I wasn't correcting my dog hard enough so he wasn't getting the message. Things were only getting worse. The corrections were only making him more agitated, so that he began aggressing earlier and earlier when he saw another dog.

This book helps you train your dog to have a different reaction to whatever sets him off so that his habit is to look at you when another dog (or person) comes around, instead of freaking out.

McConnell anticipates that things always don't go as planned; one heading is titled, "Oops! My Dog Looked Away Before I Said Okay." She also gives suggestions for troubleshooting.

Actually seeing improvement -- only one week in

This book is short, and clearly written. It is often funny, and is very easy to understand. The author goes into enough detail and gives advice on enough side issues (car aggression, techniques for specific kinds of dogs or owners) that I get the sense that she has worked these principles for a very long time with pretty much every kind of dog out there. In other words, at no point did I think, "but what about my dog, he's different because" without the author addressing the issue a few paragraphs later.

If you want volume for your book-spending money, you may be a little unhappy with how short the book was, but I was relieved by it -- I wanted to finish the book and start applying the training ASAP, so the shorter the better.

The "watch" technique is working for my dog. He's not "cured", but we are having positive events -- I got him to watch me while we were in my truck instead of lunging and barking at a dog that was walking by. He also let a cow (we hike, and ranchers let their cows out in the high country to graze) walk within ten feet of us and did not even bark. He actually stayed calm and kept looking back to me for treats. Maybe he doesn't mind cows (!), but staying that calm near another strange animal is new behavior.

I still expect it to take several months before he lets a dog go by us on the trail without trying to tear it apart, but I am seeing very small results just one week into using the watch command. Like the author suggests, we are working with easy to moderate situations, and just getting those down before we move on to high stress situations.

I have worked with 2 different $80 an hour dog trainers on this problem with my dog, and while they did teach me helpful things, I think I've gotten more useful information out of this book. If you can't afford a trainer, and you feel like you can't go another day with your dog acting like a maniac, definitely give this book a try.

Great Advice if you put the work in!

I had read McConnell's book The Other End of the Leash and really appreciated her scientific approach to the dog-human relationship. I rescued a big mix (3 years old, 70 pounds) about a year ago and once he got used to life with me and got his confidence up he started acting like a maniac on the leash when we would see other dogs. I took him to 2 rounds of obedience training which helped our bond and was good for his brain, but didn't do much for his "leash reactivity" as McConnell calls it. So I went online to see what I could find and ended up buying Feisty Fido as well as the Cautious Canine.

I have been following Feisty Fido to the letter for 2 to 3 weeks and have already started to see results. I bought the equipment that she recommends (leash, collar, and bait bag) and am following the regiment exactly. It's a lot of work, but it's totally worth it to not own the Neighborhood Menace. The book is an excellent step by step way to rehabilitate a leash reactive dog. Feisty Fido is a program to correct one behavior, but I think the method could be applied to any kind of fear-induced reactive behavior.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
