After a corporate career with companies like MTV, August Turak founded two highly successful software businesses, Raleigh Group International (RGI) and Elsinore Technologies. An amazing mix of spirituality, psychology, and business

It's hard to describe this book because I've never read another like it. It's deeply personal and completely universal; it's nuts-and-bolts business insight and it's profound spiritual insight; it's ancient philosophy told through the lens of "Star Wars" and "The Devil Wears Prada."

The best review I can give, I think, is a direct quote. Watch how he starts with a fairly commonplace psychological insight about money, moves to a concrete business application that most businesses could benefit from tremendously, twists it into an unusual look at the entertainment industry, and then (as he would say) "transcends" all that as he brings it back to his overarching theme of selflessness.

One of the most useful things I learned as a sales and marketing executive is the concept of "dollar votes"...if we really want to understand what motivates people, we should look at how people actually spend their money...I may argue quite persuasively that helping others is my top priority, but if I donate far more money to my favorite casino than to my favorite charity, I shouldn't be surprised if you remain unconvinced.

In my own company, after some disappointing forays with surveys, we dispensed with this type of market research altogether. Instead, whenever we had a new product idea, we would presell the product into our customer base with a discount for prerelease software. Only if our customers were willing to pony up cold, hard cash would we in turn invest in full-blown product development. If the requisite number of sales was not forthcoming, we gave refunds to the disappointed few and headed back to the drawing board. This approach guaranteed that every product we introduced had a market, and it was actually less expensive and time consuming than traditional forms of market research.

When we look at the world through the lens of dollar votes, we see an almost insatiable human demand for stories. Books, movies, and television are multibillion-dollar industries...The fact that we spend so much money on stories--in good times and bad--demonstrates that stories offer something we really want, not just something we like to say we want.

And what most stories offer is the vicarious experience of transformation. We all learned in English 101 that in every compelling story, the main character must be transformed over the arc of the story...According to dollar votes, the fact that we spend so much time and money watching others being transformed proves that it is this essential transformation from selfishness to selflessness that we all really want. Of course the tragic part of this analysis is that for most of us, this urge toward transformation remains vicarious...deep inside we realize that just as we can't pay someone else to go to the gym, we can't be transformed secondhand either.

Have you ever wondered, What's the secret to success in business and life in general? If so, read this book. It's AWESOME!

Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks is not your run-of-the-mill business book. August Turk is a highly successful executive and entrepreneur who was a frequent monastic guest and worked alongside the Trappist monks of Mepkin Abbey for 17 years. This book applies the lessons he learned on how to succeed in business and in life.

The message of the book is fascinating and the examples are poignant. While the solutions may seem counterintuitive, I believe August is spot-on.

Business Secrets of the Trappist Monks provides real-world advice. August offers examples from diverse organizations -- such as the monks of Mepkin Abbey; Microsoft (where he served as a consultant during its early years); a major software organization (that he founded); and, believe it or not, The Devil Wears Prada -- to highlight why authenticity, service, and selflessness are winning ingredients for success.

About the Author

Allen J. Scott is Distinguished Professor of Public Policy and Geography at the University of California at Los Angeles. He has been a professeur associ� at the University of Paris VIII (1974-75), a Croucher Fellow at the University of Hong Kong (1984), a Guggenheim Fellow (1986-87), a Visiting Exchange Scholar under the auspices of the NAS Committee on Scholarly Communication with the People's Republic of China (1986), and a Borchard Foundation Scholar (1997). He has occupied the Andr� Siegfried Chair at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques, Paris (1999), the First Trust Bank Chair of Innovation at Queen's University, Belfast (2004), and the Chaire d'Excellence Pierre de Fermat at the University of Toulouse-Le Mirail (2005). He was granted honours by the Association of American Geographers in 1987, and was elected fellow of the British Academy in 1999. In 2003 he won the Vautrin Lud Prize.

The Beach

It's time honored, dare we say clich�. If you've actually had sex on the beach, you know the experience is less From Here to Eternity and more "How do I get this sand out of my butt crack?" But oh, the sound of the waves, the feel of the ocean lapping at your toes -- we certainly understand the allure.

For those of you determined to live out those sand-and-surf fantasies, we suggest a less-itchy compromise: the deserted lifeguard stand. Let's be honest: at least one of you has daydreamed since adolescence about doing it with the lifeguard. (And if you actually have done it with the lifeguard, kudos to you. Let us know how you pulled that one off.) The stands are often made for two lifeguards to sit side by side, thus providing ample room for maneuvering. Climbing up there is half the fun, but bring a flashlight if the sun has set and you have only moonlight to guide you. A large towel should keep the action relatively sand free. Just know that should things get too wild up there, there is a risk that one of you might accidentally roll off. However, there is often a huge mound of sand in front for emergency landings, so your chances of survival are fairly high.

Interesting food for thought. Some new ideas, but some were very impractical. One suggestion per page with place to log "Date Accomplished" , suggestions for supplies needed, possible hazards, Reasonable price. Fun reading.

Fun and comprehensive list to shoot for...can you beat us?

We found this book yesterday and just had to get it. It's a list of 101 places and situations that the adventurous person should strive to have sex during thier life. They range from simple and obvious (Kitchen floor) to ones that may take some creativity and possibly a bribe (Confessional Booth). Each location has a section of ideas and advice...along with a place to take notes and "check off" the event.

I love the fact they have question and answering sections in the book where as I was reading, I felt like the author is literally speaking to me about my questions and concerns. Very helpful and helped me getting into UCLA, UC Irvine, and UC Riverside.

Doug Fields has been a leader in youth ministry for over 30 years. In addition to being a youth pastor at two churches for 11 and 20 years, Doug is the founder of Simply Youth Ministry, the co-founder of Downloadyouthministry.com, the author of more than 50 books, and is currently working with Youth Specialties & Azusa Pacific University (HomeWord’s Center for Youth/Family). These melodramas are creative and fun. They are camp-y and work well for taking a biblical story to kids of all ages in a funny, but thoughtful way. I will use them for high school Sunday school, youth camp, and children's messages during Sunday services. I can/have also use/d them for ideas for writing my own melodramas (the original reason I purchased the book.)

Spontaneous Melodramas is a great reasource for any church youth group! We love "acting out" these neat skits and we learn from them too. The skits are made so that youth groups of most any size can incorporate them. A great way to incorporate the youth. A great tool.

Do you ever have one of those nights when you want to start your meeting off in a unique way but are out of ideas? This book could be the answer to your needs. In SPONTANEOUS MELODRAMAS, you find a treasure chest full of fun, group involving stories that drive home solid Biblical truths. With next to no preparation, this book can be brought into a youth meeting and get the kids excited! The book put a humorous spin on familliar Bible stories and offers fun interactive ways to learn. My students can't get enough of the silly skits and fun that this book proivides. We have also used this book to bridge the gap between adults and teens. We pulled it out at our last Thnksgiving banquet and even the "staunchist" elders we intears of laughter after watching the stories unfold. You will enjoy this resource and will keep it to use time and time again!
