"Every so often, something happens that opens a child's perceptual portals to the wonderful world of science ... This compact, astute book could be that 'something' for early-elementary students who don't yet know how to embrace science in real-world terms. And for those who do, it will only fuel their fascination. ... For junior engineers, this is a great book; for any curious child, it could be an 'aha' moment."—Parents' Choice

"With this fun activity book, kids will learn about six simple machines: wheel and axle, wedge, screw, lever, pulley, and inclined plane. They’ll discover how these basic machines make life easier and how to make their own by following step-by-step instructions."—Today's Parent, "18 STEM books your kids will love"

"The layout is clean and organized. The illustrations consist mostly of full-color photographs, which are beautifully done, showing each step of the project close-up and in high-contrasting colors. The best part of the book is how the author points out machines people are likely to see every day: seesaws, window blinds, front teeth (they are wedges!), scissors and so on." —Citizen-Times (Asheville, NC)

"Simple machines are all around, and this encourages young readers to spot them and, even more, to systematically record and explore the complexities of how they work. … An excellent introduction to basic physics and machines as well as to the scientific method and what it means to think in a systematic and empirical way."—Booklist

About the Author
Kelly Doudna has always had an interest in science. She was a member of her junior high school school science club, but turned her focus to English and writing in college. She attempted the study of meteorology in graduate school, but was kicked out of the program after she flunked calculus twice. That led her to pursue a commercial art degree, and today she combines all of these interests as a graphic designer and in-house writer at Mighty Media, Inc. Kelly has authored over 250 educational books for children on topics ranging from the alphabet to baby animals to the weather. In her free time, Kelly enthusiastically pursues bicycling, photography, cooking, and the craft beer scene, and documents it all in her blog.

Terrific Hands-On Learning
By LindaB
I’ve seen students study simple machines in the past, from the youngest to the oldest at my school (K-8), and to support them, I’ve scrambled to find many resources that would help them in a discovery process. There needed to be some explanation, a gathering of materials, and then the fun work of experimenting, trying all sorts of ways to try to learn how each kind of machine works. We did do it, but how I wish I had had this wonderful book by Kelly Doudna to help the students learn!
Kelly introduces the six simple machines with good basic examples in words and pictures first. For example, a young girl pours her breakfast cereal from a container; it’s an inclined plane. And that, along with the other machines’ examples, shows what they REALLY DO. Each one, when used, gives a mechanical advantage, an important first vocabulary term. The introduction also introduces Archimedes, and like a few other background pages throughout the exercises, it shows a picture, the time period in which he lived, some of what he studied, and a famous quote. Early in the book there is also a visual list of all the common household items needed in order to do the experiments. It will be helpful to those preparing to experiment.
Each machine is thoroughly introduced, and includes what is termed a “Spotlight” (the first picture) which is a real-life example of one of the machines. For example, an airplane’s propeller is shown and defined as a screw, which is an inclined plane wrapped around a core. And the ferris wheel (picture above) is introduced in the section about the wheel and axle. Each “Spotlight” offers history along with pictured explanations of the example. My favorite explains the pinball machine! The book is filled with clearly explained information and lots of pictures, along with many application activities. It has a few pictures at the back in order to see if you can identify the simple machines in use, and a brief historical piece about Rube Goldberg.
I imagine that not only should a school’s library have one of these books, each classroom will benefit from this terrific resource. It's a book both entertaining and educational!

Fun and educational
By Vera
I remember when my children were in school they learned about simple machines in school during science lessons. It would have been absolutely fantastic to have had The Kids’ Book of Simple Machines available for them to thoroughly explore the basics of machine concepts.

In this super little book, the six basic machines are introduced in understandable terms and then spotlights are on the history of their discovery and use as well. The six are: lever, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, wheel and axle, and screw. Included are activities using simple, everyday items to make these or use them to create engineering marvels of their very own.
description

I like that the author brings a bit of history lesson into the mix as well - introducing Archimedes, Galileo, and on to the Wright brothers and Rube Goldberg. I like that there is a separate chapter for each “machine” after the initial introductory chapter. Again, the author has placed a spotlight in each chapter that captures the reader’s attention with history or more detail. Wonderful! Then at the back, finding or identifying machines in everyday things. And then the wonderful concept of true engineering – putting together several “machines” to create one.

And like all good educational books, there is a glossary of words and terms that might need a bit of defining. Then for hunting and finding a bit of special information, there is an index at the back and a table of contents in the front. Truly a book that will prove entertaining (for boys and girls alike), educational (for kids of all ages – yep, Mom & Dad will enjoy discovering with the kids), and enjoyable.

Fun and educational!
By Ronda A. Kane
I was excited about this book that I ordered for my 9-year-old grandson, and I was not disappointed. It has lots of examples and simple experiments to help kids learn to recognize the simple machines we use all the time and how to use the concepts to make work easier and safer. I wish I'd had a book like this when I was a kid.

Debut author Ami Polonsky's moving, beautifully-written novel about identity, self-esteem, and friendship shines with the strength of a young person's spirit and the enduring power of acceptance.

Praise for Gracefully Grayson

"Don't be intimidated when I say that Gracefully Grayson is an important book. (It is.) It's also a brave, exhilarating, heart-stopping, roller-coaster ride of self-discovery that will leave you cheering."
-Dean Pitchford, Oscar-winning songwriter and award-winning author of Captain Nobody and Nickel Bay Nick "In this sweet and thoughtful debut, an introverted sixth grader begins to come into her own as a transgender girl. The writing is clear and effortless, with a straightforward plot and likable characters. Grayson is a charming narrator who balances uncertainty with clarity, bravery with anxiety. This title has less obvious and didactic intent than other novels featuring transgender protagonists. A welcome addition to a burgeoning genre."
-School Library Journal
"Thoughtfully told through Grayson's eyes, the story conveys his angst, hurt, loss, and emerging confidence as he struggles with a whirlwind of emotions. His new friends allow him to find the courage to become who "she" really is, and we are privileged to watch the transformation take place. With great courage, Polonsky's debut novel reminds us with much sensitivity that we are all unique and deserve to become who we are meant to be."
-Booklist "Polonsky captures the loneliness of a child resigned to disappear rather than be rejected, and then the courageous risk that child eventually takes to be seen for who she is. The first-person narration successfully positions readers to experience Grayson's confusion, fear, pain, and triumphs as they happen, lending an immediate and intimate feel to the narrative." -Horn Book

Gr 6 Up—In this sweet and thoughtful debut, an introverted sixth grader begins to come into her own as a transgender girl. Grayson was orphaned in preschool and lives with her aunt and uncle in Chicago. She's becoming more and more aware of a nagging feeling that she should be living as a girl, despite being male-assigned, and on a daring whim decides to audition for the part of Persephone in the school play. She has a supportive teacher and a new friend, but also has to contend with school bullies and disapproving adults. The writing is clear and effortless, with a straightforward plot and likable characters. Grayson is a charming narrator who balances uncertainty with clarity, bravery with anxiety. This title has less obvious and didactic intent than other novels featuring transgender protagonists. A welcome addition to a burgeoning genre.—Kyle Lukoff, Corlears School, New York City

LGBT for Kids (To Understand)
By Wren Lee

Amazon / Goodsreads

Alone at home, twelve-year-old Grayson Sender glows, immersed in beautiful thoughts and dreams. But at school, Grayson grasps at shadows, determined to fly under the radar. Because Grayson has been holding onto a secret for what seems like forever: “he” is a girl on the inside, stuck in the wrong gender’s body.

The weight of this secret is crushing, but leaving it behind would mean facing ridicule, scorn, and rejection. Despite these dangers, Grayson’s true self itches to break free. Strengthened by an unexpected friendship and a caring teacher who gives her a chance to step into the spotlight, Grayson might finally have the tools to let her inner light shine.

Debut author Ami Polonsky’s moving, beautifully-written novel shines with the strength of a young person’s spirit and the enduring power of acceptance

This book is diversity for children. It shows a young kid who doesn't feel right in his skin. (I have to use the male pronoun here.) It is for a younger audience. This gives them a chance to adapt to this new LGBT. So this would help condition people to those who are like Grayson. It's for young people. Which is great. It helps them understand, so the future isn't hatred as stated in the books.

I will use the female pronoun because that's what Grayson would want. Grayson wanted to be female, so I'll treat her as if she was genetically female. In real life, I would say that Grayson is a she.

Grayson is very brave. She hid her true self. She was truly someone else underneath her skin. Mentally, she was a girl. Physically, she was a boy. She didn't let that completely smother her. She still imagined and pretended. That's never enough. She has been hiding. But that was not right. She needed to break free. She needed to become the person inside.
And the change that happens to make Grayson choose the person inside...amazing. She slowly and steadily became who she wanted to be. With friends. And love. She was given a warm home to come out in. She was so lucky. She was lucky to become her true self in a warm place.
She was true to herself. Which is something I believe in. Staying true to yourself is important. You can't let people smother you. You have to be yourself. You have to be who you want to be. Even if there is hatred. Even if there is pain. You have to be you.
It reveals a true message. Be yourself. Be yourself. You can't be happy, truly happy, if you're not yourself. You can be happy. You just have to be true.
And Grayson is true to herself.
Grayson was so young. That's why I think this book is great. It's not a teenager. It's a middle school kid. She is so young. It shows that LGBT happens in everyone not just adults or teens. It happens in these tweens too.

The story is lighthearted and sweet. It is innocent. It truly shows the middle school kid. Not yet tainted by the teenager livelihood but still a rough time that doesn't contain the harmony of childhood. Middle school kids are stuck. They are in an uncomfortable time period between childhood and adolescence.
The plot isn't bad. It's not that dramatic. It is a good book to get people introduced to LGBT. It's not harsh and dark like other LGBT books. (Especially for young adults.) We aren't throw into this terrible world. We do have the stairs scene. That was surprising. It does show you the weight on middle school kids' shoulders. That was the only heavy scene. But it was needed. It shows that LGBT people aren't always loved. They are hated. They know it too. And they're brave to stay open and out. And that's what I love about LGBT.

The ending is good too. It's not a battle. It's a nice ending. A good ending. It's a sweet ending.
It might not entirely be realistic for every person who goes through the same thing. You don't always get the kind setting. Grayson was so lucky to have that. But as I said, it's a good starter LGBT book.
The book ends on a high note. Grayson is not who she truly is. Grayson is free of the shackles of humanity. She becomes her true self. And she's happy. That's the most important thing. She's happy.

Ultimately reinforces gender stereotypes
By Natasha
I enjoyed this book and was certainly caught up in it. The writing was nicely done, the characters likeable. I had some flashbacks to middle school, which was a while ago for me, although actually my middle school experience was lonelier and more traumatic than Grayson's even though I'm not trans. I had English teachers like Finn, I was in theater, I knew girls like Paige and Amelia. In all of the tangential respects, this book was well done, and I certainly don't intend for the rest of this review to discourage anyone from reading it.

My complaint is with how the book addresses its own central subject matter. The author is not transgender - neither am I - and I would be very interested to see some reviews from trans readers. But here is my take as a cisgender woman.

I feel that Polonsky is unable to break out of a rigid gender binarism. Apparently Grayson is a girl because s/he likes wearing pretty dresses and jewelry. This is so simplistic and stereotypical. Gender is so much more than how we dress. A boy may like to wear dresses while still being a boy. A girl may hate to wear dresses - many do. I happen to like skirts, but I don't wear makeup or high heels or pink or glitter (and I didn't in middle school either) and rarely shave/wax my legs. As an introvert, I never understood why other girls felt the need to go in groups to the bathroom - it's kind of creepy and annoying, really - or many similar behaviors displayed by extraverted teenage girls. So what, then - am I actually male? Why have I never questioned that I'm a girl, or woman? It's actually a very interesting question. I have always just *felt* female. I imagine, although I don't know for sure, that there are people who are born with male anatomy who just *feel* female, without being obsessed with things as stereotypically feminine as sparkly pink hearts. Not to mention people who feel that they bridge the boundary between male and female.

I know this is a middle grade book, but still. Polonsky handled other aspects of this novel with subtlety. Why didn't she turn the same attention to the issue of gender?

Gracefully Grayson
By Hannah @ Paperback Treasures
Gracefully Grayson is such an important book. Without being preachy, Gracefully Grayson sends a powerful message while still telling an engaging story. Ami Polonsky handles the topic at hand gracefully (get it?), and I absolutely loved it.

Generally, I prefer books with bigger stories about characters who just happen to be LGBT over books that focus mainly on the character's LGBT identity, because it's so important to show that not only straight, cisgender white people can have adventures and have stories that deserve to be told. But Gracefully Grayson sort of blurs the line between the two: yes, Grayson's gender expression and identity are the most important subject, but there are plenty of other storylines that tie into this theme in one way or another. And while stories about characters who happen to be gay/lesbian/bisexual/etc. should definitely be a thing by now, I (sadly) don't know if our society is ready for the same thing with a transgender character. Since a transgender identity is (again, sadly) still so controversial, it makes sense for the experience to be so overwhelming for this to be the focus of Grayson's story.

Ami Polonsky handles Grayson's experience with the utmost respect and honesty. Gracefully Grayson is not an in-depth exploration of why Grayson would like to be a girl - a preference for girls' clothes is the only indicator we really get to see - but I didn't mind because Grayson absolutely does not have to justify his feelings to anyone. The focus is more on the effects of this identity; this is simply Grayson's story. I also appreciated that sexuality is not brought into any of this, since it's important to show that gender identity and sexual orientation don't have to be related, and I'm glad the focus remained solely on Grayson's gender expression.

It's hard to separate the issue of gender expression from the rest of the novel, since it affects pretty much everything in Grayson's life, but I loved all of the other storylines as well. The cast of characters is great, showing a wide variety of reactions to Grayson's experience. I loved seeing Grayson find friends and be who he wants to be in theater, and while of course I didn't agree with them, it's interesting and realistic to see how Grayson's aunt and uncle (with whom she lives) try to deal with all of this. I especially loved the ending, which is optimistic and hopeful without being unrealistically happy.

With beautiful writing and a strong, relatable main character, Gracefully Grayson is an honest, moving, powerful story that I loved. I definitely recommend giving Grayson the chance to tell her story to you as well.

We Learn Nothing: Essays, by Tim Kreider

“Kreider locates the right simile and the pith of situations as he carefully catalogues humanity’s inventive and manifold ways of failing” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

In We Learn Nothing, satirical cartoonist Tim Kreider turns his funny, brutally honest eye to the dark truths of the human condition, asking big questions about human-sized problems: What if you survive a brush with death and it doesn’t change you? Why do we fall in love with people we don’t even like? How do you react when someone you’ve known for years unexpectedly changes genders?

With a perfect combination of humor and pathos, these essays, peppered with Kreider’s signature cartoons, leave us with newfound wisdom and a unique prism through which to examine our own chaotic journeys through life. These are the conversations you have only with best friends or total strangers, late at night over drinks, near closing time.

This edition also includes the sensationally popular essay “The Busy Trap,” as seen in the New York Times.

Review
"Tim Kreider's writing is heartbreaking, brutal and hilarious—usually at the same time. He can do in a few pages what I need several hours of screen time and tens of millions to accomplish. And he does it better. Come to think of it, I'd rather not do a blurb. I am beginning to feel bad about myself." (Judd Apatow)

"A remarkable collection . . . I found myself nodding in agreement and wondering how [Tim Kreider] could so consistently express my feelings, and express them so much better than I ever could." (Nancy Pearl NPR.org)

“In a political atmosphere as angry as this, [Kreider's] oblique, self-deprecating commentary may be the only angle to which party loyalists on either side are likely to respond. We Learn Nothing should be their required reading.” (Willamette Week (Portland, Ore.))

“Kreider is as compelling a writer as he is a visual satirist. His essays tend toward the ‘elegiac,’ as he puts it—something that cannot be said of his cartoons—but the same delightfully brutal honesty underlies both. Kreider’s descriptions are often simultaneously surprising and resonant . . . self-effacing and funny.” (City Paper (Baltimore))

“Amazing . . . Any thinking person with a sense of humor will find We Learn Nothing provocative and delightful, reminiscent, in varying ways, of David Foster Wallace, James Thurber, David Sedaris, and Susan Sontag.” (Jennifer Finney Boylan author of She’s Not There)

“Kreider is a superb essayist, a funny and fluent storyteller who wears his cultural literacy lightly . . . To read “The Creature Walks Among Us,” “The Czar’s Daughter,” “Escape from Pony Island,” or “An Insult to the Brain” is to appreciate a mordant but affectionate observer of life’s rich pageant, and a craftsman who almost never puts a word wrong.” (Johns Hopkins Magazine)

“Kreider locates the right simile and the pith of situations as he carefully catalogues humanity’s inventive and manifold ways of failing.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“Earnest, well-turned personal essays about screw-ups without an ounce of sanctimony—a tough trick.” (Kirkus Reviews)

"Tim Kreider may be the most subversive soul in America and his subversions—by turns public and intimate, political and cultural—are just what our weary, mixed-up nation needs. The essays in We Learn Nothing are for anybody who believes it's high time for some answers, damn it." (Richard Russo Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Empire Falls)

"Whether he is expressing himself in highly original cartoons that are hilarious visual poems, or in prose that exposes our self-delusions by the way he probes his own experience with candor, Tim Kreider is a writer-artist who brilliantly understands that every humorist at his best is a liberator. Because he is irreverent, makes us laugh, ruffles the feathers of the pretentious and the pompous, and keeps us honest, We Learn Nothing is a pleasure from its first page to the last." (Charles Johnson bestselling author of Middle Passage)

“We Learn Nothing articulated, for me, more human truths than any book in recent memory. When you’re done with it, it almost feels like finishing a textbook: you actually feel like you understand how things work a little better.” (PublishersWeekly.com)

Fourteen years ago, I was stabbed in the throat. This is kind of a long story and less interesting than it sounds. A lot of people have told me about their own near-death experiences over the years, often in harrowing medical detail, imagining that those details—how many times they rolled the car, how many vertebrae shattered, how many months spent in traction—will somehow convey the subjective psychic force of the experience, the way some people will relate the whole narrative of a dream in a futile attempt to evoke its ambient feeling. Except for the ten or fifteen minutes during which it looked like I was about to die, which I would prefer not to relive, getting stabbed wasn’t even among the worst experiences of my life. In fact it was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

After my unsuccessful murder I wasn’t unhappy for an entire year. Winston Churchill’s aphorism about the exhilaration of being shot at without result is verifiably true. I was reminded of an old Ray Bradbury story, “The Lost City of Mars,” in which a man finds a miraculous machine that enables him to experience his own violent death over and over again, as many times as he likes—in locomotive collisions, race car crashes, exploding rocket ships—until he emerges flayed of all his Christian guilt and unconscious longing for death, forgiven and free, finally alive.

I can’t claim to have been continuously euphoric the whole time; it’s just that, during that grace period, nothing much could bother me or get me down. The horrible thing that I’d always dreaded was going to happen to me had finally happened. I figured I was off the hook for a while. In a parallel universe only two millimeters away—the distance between my carotid and the stiletto—I had been flown home in the cargo hold instead of in coach. As far as I was concerned everything in this life was what Raymond Carver, in writing of his own second chance, called “gravy.”

My friends immediately mocked me out of my self-consciousness about the nerve damage that had left me with a lopsided smile. I started brewing my own dandelion wine in a big Amish crock. I listened to old one-hit wonders much too stupid to name in print. And I developed a strange new laugh that’s stayed with me to this day—a raucous, barking thing that comes from deep in the diaphragm, the laugh of a much larger man, that makes people in bars or restaurants look over for a second to make sure I’m not about to open up on the crowd with a weapon. I don’t laugh this way all the time—certainly not when I’m just being polite. The last time it happened was when I told my friend Harold, “You don’t understand me,” in mock-wounded protest at some unjust charge of sleazery, and he retorted: “No, sir, I understand you very well—it is you who do not understand yourself.” The laugh always seems to be in response to the same elusive joke, some dark, hilarious universal truth.

Not for one passing moment did it occur to me to imagine that God Must Have Spared My Life for Some Purpose. Even if I’d been the type who was prone to such silly notions, I would’ve been rudely disabused of it by the heavy-handed coincidence of the Oklahoma City bombing occurring on the same day I spent in a coma. If there is some divine plan that requires my survival and the deaths of all those children in day care, I respectfully decline to participate. What I had been was not blessed or chosen but lucky. Not to turn up my nose at luck; it’s better to be lucky than just about anything else in life. And if you’re reading this now you’re among the lucky, too.

I wish I could recommend the experience of not being killed to everyone. It’s a truism that this is why people enjoy thrill-seeking pastimes, ranging from harmless adrenaline fixes like horror movies and roller coasters to what are essentially suicide attempts with safety nets, like bungee jumping and skydiving. The trick is that to get the full effect you have to be genuinely uncertain that you’re going to survive. The best approximation would be to hire an incompetent, Clouseauesque hit man to assassinate you.

It’s one of the maddening perversities of human psychology that we only notice we’re alive when we’re reminded we’re going to die, the same way some of us appreciate our girlfriends only after they’ve become exes. I saw the same thing happen, in a more profound and lasting way, to my father when he was terminally ill: a lightening, an amused indifference to the nonsense that the rest of us think of as the serious business of the world. A neighbor was suing my father over some property dispute during his illness, but if you tried to talk to him about such practical matters he’d just sing you old songs like “A Bird in a Gilded Cage” in a silly, quavering falsetto until you gave up. He cared less about things that didn’t matter and more about the things that did. It was during his illness that he gave me the talk that all my artist friends have envied, in which he told me that he and my mother believed in my talent and I shouldn’t worry about getting “some dumb job.”

Maybe people who have lived with the reality of their own mortality for months or years are permanently changed by it, but getting stabbed was more like getting struck by lightning, over almost as soon as it happened, and the illumination didn’t last. You can’t feel crazily grateful to be alive your whole life any more than you can stay passionately in love forever—or grieve forever, for that matter. Time makes us all betray ourselves and get back to the busywork of living. Before a year had gone by, the same everyday anxieties and frustrations began creeping back. I was disgusted to catch myself yelling in traffic, pounding on my computer, lying awake at night worrying about what was to become of me. I can’t recapture that feeling of euphoric gratitude any more than I can really remember the mortal terror I felt when I was pretty sure I had about four minutes to live. But I know that it really happened, that that state of grace is accessible to us, even if I only blundered across it once and never find my way back. At my cabin on the Chesapeake Bay I’ll see bald eagles swoop up from the water with wriggling little fish in their talons, and whenever they accidentally drop their catch, I like to imagine that fish trying to tell his friends about his own near-death experience, a perspective so unprecedented there are no words in the fish language to describe it: for a short time he was outside the world, he could see forever, there’s so much more than they knew, but he’s glad to be back.

Once a year on my stabbiversary, I remind myself that this is still my bonus life, a round on the house. But now that I’m back in the slog of everyday life, I have to struggle to keep things in what I still insist is their true perspective. I know intellectually that all the urgently pressing items on our mental lists—our careers, car repairs, the daily headlines, the goddamned taxes—are just so much noise, that what matters is spending time with the people you love. It’s just hard to bear in mind when the hard drive crashes or the shower drain clogs first thing in the day. Apparently I can only ever attain that God’s-eye view in the grip of the talons.

I was not cheered to read about psychological studies suggesting that most people inevitably return to a certain emotional baseline after circumstantial highs and lows. How happy we can hope to be may be as inalterable and unfair as our height or metabolism or the age at which we’ll lose our hair. This is reassuring news if you’ve undergone some trauma, but less so if your own emotional thermostat is set so low it makes you want to phone up the landlord and yell at him. You’d like to think that nearly getting killed would be a permanently life-altering experience, but in truth it was less painful, and occasioned less serious reflection, than certain breakups I’ve gone through. I’ve demonstrated an impressive resilience in the face of valuable life lessons, and the main thing I seem to have learned from this one is that I am capable of learning nothing from almost any experience, no matter how profound. If anything, the whole episode only confirmed my solipsistic suspicion that in the story of Me only supporting characters would die, while I, its first-person narrator and star, was immortal. It gave me much more of an existential turn when my vision started to blur.

I don’t know why we take our worst moods so much more seriously than our best, crediting depression with more clarity than euphoria. We dismiss peak moments and passionate love affairs as an ephemeral chemical buzz, just endorphins or hormones, but accept those 3 A.M. bouts of despair as unsentimental insights into the truth about our lives. It’s easy now to dismiss that year as nothing more than the same sort of shaky, hysterical high you’d feel after getting clipped by a taxi. But you could also try to think of it as a glimpse of reality, being jolted out of a lifelong stupor. It’s like the revelation I had the first time I ever flew in an airplane as a kid: when you break through the cloud cover you realize that above the passing squalls and doldrums there is a realm of eternal sunlight, so keen and brilliant you have to squint against it, a vision to hold on to when you descend once again beneath the clouds, under the oppressive, petty jurisdiction of the local weather.

Incisive, confessional, hilarious, rueful commentary by a master essayist
By Reddhedd
I bought this book after reading an essay("The Busy Trap")by this author in the New York Times online. I had never heard of Tim Kreider before, but this essay was so topical, so insightful, so on-target that I simply had to see what else he had to say.

I was a little hesitant because it became clear after a bit of research that Kreider's politics and mine were pretty far out of sync. (Not that I mind competing viewpoints, I just don't like the whole bashing thing.) I need not have worried. Unlike much of Kreider's work of the George W. Bush era, which consistently savaged all things Republican, We Learn Nothing is not overtly political. Each essay is unique, highly original, wistful, soul-baring, poignant, and achingly human. Although a naturally passionate lefty partisan, Kreider is, to his immense credit, rigorously intellectually honest and reflexively fair throughout this latest collection. He is unsparingly critical of himself and those with whom he aligns, and gracious and empathetic to his philosophical opposites. It feels a little like an act of atonement, as though Kreider is saying: Sorry I got a little carried away there. See, I'm much better now.

I cannot recall ever having read an author so preternaturally incisive, so aware, so adept at performing what amounts to a full monty of the soul without seeming self-indulgent. Kreider is relentlessly introspective and profoundly self-aware. Yet this is no act of mere navel-gazing. Above all, We Learn Nothing is the work of a sensitive, piercing intelligence trying to make sense of the world by first making sense of itself. This book should be required reading for anyone trying to come to terms with this messy, confusing, brutal, beautiful, tragic, hilarious, stupid, fragile thing we call life. Scratch that: This book should be required reading, period.

After reading this book I thought, I would love to spend an afternoon with this guy over beers, discussing anything and everything.

Masterful storytelling
By Dustin G. Rhodes
It's easy to compare a book like this to the works of a host of other contemporary essayists (Sedaris, et al), but after the second or third essay I realized Kreider's voice is unique: he tells stories, often with the barest of details, in a way that doesn't expose himself too much and/or doesn't exploit someone else in the process. Which is to say, he has written a book that is heart-breaking, charming, edge-of-your-seat suspenseful (hoping that he will offer up all the gory details) and -- even though I hate this word when used to describe writing -- generous. Kreider is a masterful storyteller, and I can't recall the last time I enjoyed a book of essays this much.

The stories themselves cover a lot of terrain: dysfunctional family members, transgendered friends, near death experiences, relationships; but always from the perspective of someone who's madly in love with his friends and family, warts and all. Kreider exposes the ugly/beautiful truth of what it means to be human in the most honest, thoughtful, endearing and entertaining way.

Highly, highly recommended.

The pain may never end; why must this book?
By S.S.
Tim's brilliant writing style, scathing satire and sharp wit will alleviate your pain of "being a person in the world". It's tremendously comforting to discover that you are not alone in your secret despair.

Review

From the reviews:

"The Handbook of Disaster Research will, without a doubt, be the most important publication of its type during this decade. Just about everyone who is anyone in the disaster research community has shared their knowledge on the important topics of the day. The authors and the publisher are to be congratulated for completing the book that will be widely sought after by practitioners, researchers and students of disaster planning and response. Thank you for this outstanding contribution to the field."

Henry W. Fischer III, Director, Center for Disaster Research & Education, Millersville University

"The Handbook of Disaster Research will generate considerable excitement amongst international disaster research and management professionals. Finally, a volume that takes on the task of articulating and unpacking the many social complexities of modern disasters and catastrophes. By taking a multi-disciplinary perspective, the Handbook addresses the very pressing need to better understand the social dimensions of disaster. Analyses of key social-psychological concepts, such as risk and uncertainty, stand beside sociological assessments of class, community, organisation, technology and the media. It is academically weighty, boasting contributions from world-leading scholars. Yet, the Handbook offers a very balanced set of analyses that will undoubtedly appeal to not only the researcher, but the practitioner and the policy-maker alike."

Dr. Derek Bopping, Defence Science and Technology Organisation, Department of Defence, Australia

"This is an amazing handbook. An impressive array of authors, including practitioners as well as academics, provide intellectual depth and breadth on disaster, risk, and uncertainty. A "must have" for anyone who wants to know the cutting edges of disaster research. The Handbook of Disaster Research is unlike any other handbook I’ve seen. It covers "the field," but does a great deal more than that. For it is provocative and creative, each chapter providing much, much more than mere "coverage." By this I mean the authors present and develop new ideas, about disaster, risk, uncertainty, warning, or, more generally, social behavior. This is not surprising when you look at the list of individual authors. Luminaries in their fields, they represent some of the most creative thinkers in the social sciences today. It is surprising, however, to find so much creativity in a Handbook. The editors have done a superb job. I’m impressed, too, with the breadth of expertise that is represented. Practitioners as well as academics, the "old guard" of disaster research as well as the young, rising stars, and the refreshing appearance of scholars from places other than the United States. I need this book on my shelf."

Lee Clarke, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

I expected a lot more from this title but found myself fairly disappointed with it
By Amazon Customer
This book guides the reader through the process of building a fairly barebones 3D First Person shooter with LibGDX. I expected a lot more from this title but found myself fairly disappointed with it. The book firstly doesn't offer very much explanation of the code throughout. It more so presents it to you and says "this section does X." It is 220ish pages in length and 50 are set aside for teaching modeling, rigging, and animating in Blender. While this is a useful skill for creating the 3D artwork within the game, I feel as though more of the books content could be used to describing the functionality of the classes we used that come in LibGDX, the classes created within the example projects, and covering more advanced projects within the scope of 3D game creation. This book will get you up and running a 3D game created with LibGDX but I think more explanation throughout would have been halpful and rather than scratching the surface and spending so much on 3D asset creation instead delve into more advanced topics that could be implemented within the example project.

Great introduction to building games with 3d
By Amazon Customer
Great introduction to building games with 3d. Nice to have a single, coherent body of work describing how to get started. Particularly interesting if you have only been exposed to 2D development with libGDX.
