Gr 6–9—This thorough encyclopedia of the Bigfoot legend offers hundreds of alphabetically arranged entries on all things Bigfoot, including specific legends from different locations, sightings stories, movies, theories, and related phenomena. Black-and-white images of storytellers and sites are featured throughout, and the book has a clean layout with sidebars. However, while the entries are well ordered and clear, there is no set structure in terms of naming or topic division. Entries on films, for instance, are named for the given movie, while other sections are named for the location where a sighting was reported. Other entries are items of interest (such as "Dogs and Bigfoot"), but there is no way to categorize these subjects and separate them out. In addition, the point of view of the encyclopedia lacks consistency: some entries are written in an academic style (though with no citations), while others read like personal stories (some even suggesting that Bigfoot is not only real, but also a danger to the general public). Informative Overview of Bigfoot Lore

A excellent, encyclopedic collection of information about Bigfoot and his relatives, certain to be informative to all but the most knowledgeable. There are, of course, the expected accounts about Jacko, the yeti, the links to proto-humans, UFOs and Bigfoot, and the Russian almasty captured in WWII. However, there are also aspects I was not as familiar with including numerous reports of Bigfoot shot at but showing no signs of being hit, reports linking Bigfoot with maintaining shelter in cave systems, and apparent Bigfoot shelters found in the woods (something Les Stroud, Survivorman, discussed in his Bigfoot-hunting TV special). The encyclopedic format and liberal use of photos aids readability, and provides a broad overview of the topic. Makes me want to go hunting for Bigfoot in the nearby Shawnee National Forest of Southern Illinois, a Bigfoot hangout I've been told (farmers frequently report seeing them walking across their fields near the distant treeline frequently). Highly recommended.

I also liked the matter-of-fact writing style of Redfern

Although controversial, this is undoubtably an intriguing topic. I thought I'd heard about everything related to Sasquatch but Redfern expands the genre to include description of a variety of similar hominid sightings. Many of these I had never heard of, including the Almasty of Russia, Batutut of Borneo, and Yowie of Australia. I especially appreciated the encyclopedic nature of the book as it can be used to quickly, alphabetically locate information. I also liked the matter-of-fact writing style of Redfern. I can recommend this book.

Recommended and exhaustive compendium which is not afraid to court controversy!

Nick Redfern has taken a great volume of information and put it together into a compendium that is fairly complete. The author gives brief overviews not only of American reports, but gives a truly international feel by showcasing reports out of South America, Australia, Asia, Europe and even his home country of England, a lot of which I was unaware of and most likely was written about in Nick's other Bigfoot books focusing on Anomalous Primates of the British Isles. I do have to caution though, that the author is not prone to shy away from the more fantastical elements reported by some witnesses, such as the alleged connection to UFOs, strange disappearances by these creatures, hominids which seem to be impervious to gunfire and cases where the creatures seemed to be not entirely substantial but are described in terms of a witness attempting to hit the creature, but the object used goes right through the creature(!) Whether you agree with or believe those more fantastical elements or not is irrelevant because the author has included those bits of controversy into this excellent volume with no prejudice or editing. I truly enjoyed this book, and do recommend it to those who may not know a great deal about this subject or for that person (like me) who just loves to read about these mystery creatures. I give this one a solid 9 stars. Excellent all the way around!

Alice thinks she's outgrown Patrick, but is soon bored with handsome Brian's pranks; when loyal Patrick is slated for victimization, Alice must reevaluate her decisions. In the end, intelligence and loyalty triumph over superficiality. Only an author of Naylor's nimble skill could hold these ingredients together in a readable, laughable, and, yes, sensitive story. Alice is the same delightful character from The Agony of Alice (Atheneum, 1985), although, naturally, more mature. Naylor is a versatile, prolific author whose achievements have just been crowned with a Newbery; her books about Alice (this is the fourth) are many readers' favorites, with good reason: laugh-aloud funny, they also explore real concerns with unusual frankness and compassion. Here, Alice is still in seventh grade, in the throes of bowing to her peers' decrees; suddenly one of the ``beautiful people'' in her class, she hangs around with old friend Pamela and some boys she has the wit to think of as the ``Three Handsome Stooges.'' Earrings are now a big deal: there's a club, and every weekend is devoted to buying and trading; it takes Alice a while to admit to herself that it's all boring, and that she dislikes excluding old friend Elizabeth, who doesn't want pierced ears. Yet Sisterhood, even Famous Eighthood, does not take care of all of her problems or answer all of her questions about life and love. Can she be Sisters with all three girls who want to be her brother Lester's girlfriends? How does she treat the fact that her father is dating her teacher, Miss Summers? How do you accept a box of valentine candy from a boy? In fact, how do boys fit into Universal Sisterhood -- or is there a Universal Humanhood? How far do you go when being part of the crowd means doing something you don't want to do?

As in the earlier Alice books, Alice copes with life in her own way, and her answers to her endless problems are often funny and surprisingly right.

It is about fitting in with certain peers*

All but Alice was a great book to read. It is about when Alice wants a bulletin board, her ears pierced, and even joins two clubs-The Earring Club and the All-Stars Fan Club. She works at the Melody Inn for three hours and wants to be part of the "in" crowd at school.
Alice may act different in this book out of the other books, but I know how that feels. You act different when you are in a different and a snobbier club and then realize of how idiotic you were to people who didn't pick on you at all.
It is not like Alice picks on anyone in this novel, but it was cruel of her to embarrass her friend Elizabeth like that. One of the Three Handsome Stooges likes and picks on Alice a lot. Alice feels different and one of the Popular and the Beautiful people at her school.
But the truth is, Alice gets so sick of Brian (one of the 3 Stooges) picking on her. Even in one of the chapters, he puts her face in the snow for fun like it is funny. And on Valentine's Day, her ex-boyfriend Patrick comes over and gives her a big box of chocolates.
Alice didn't realize that she had to share them with him for some weird reason. So Lester tells her that and she reinvites him over.
Lester has a Woman Situation again! Loretta Jenkins (who works at his dad's store) likes him! Lester just wants to take a break from dating and concentrate on homework. Or, in other words, L-I-F-E. Meaning a "non-female-dating-crisis" life.
And turns out that Alice's dad goes out with her 7th-grade Language Arts teacher Miss Summers. Again. And he gives her a Vivaldi cassette. AND, turns out that Alice becomes herself again, kisses Patrick again (because he threw up on the bus and Brian told Alice to make fun of him when he comes back but she comes to the rescue and they talk and then kiss on the bus. Yep. Just like that!), and quits the Earring Club (I think) and the All-Stars Fan CLub.
The letter Alice wrote to a famous rock-star was very funny. Even though it was a joke, the person in charge of it mailed it to the star!
This was a good book for peoples out there who have trouble fitting in with the right people. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor is a great author and knows how to describe a junior-high girl's life today.
So if you're bored, then I suggest reading All But Alice.

Not as good as the other Alice books...

It's the winter of Alice's seventh grade year, and all she wants is to fit in. She joins an "Earring Club," but soon finds it rather monotonous to spend so much time shopping for and talking about mere jewelry. She also joins the All-Stars Fan Club, because all the popular kids are, and ends up writing fan mail to a rock star she doesn't even like.

Obviously, Alice's actions and reactions are typical of any junior high girl. The fact that she's always felt ostracized by the death of her mother when she was a preschooler only compounds Alice's need to fit in. However, Naylor has demonstrated her talent for taking simple concepts and making them into interesting, funny storylines in the other "Alice" books; this one just isn't up to par. Still, readers who enjoy the series will certainly want to read this book, simply for more Alice stories.

This book was pretty good, it didn't really have much of a climax, but it was a good book. The characters were well written, and she described the setting well. but what I liked was that even though this is from a series, you didn't have to read the ones before it to know what she was talking about. And if you have read the books before it, she isn't so repeatative that it gets boring.

In this book I didn't really have a favorite part. The entire book was really good - and it doesn't take forever to read.

Two story elements that Phyllis is great at, is how you preceive the characters. You can really see throughout the story how Alice's ideas and thoughts mature and differ from the beginning. She is also really good and letting you know what the theme of the book is. You don't have to think about it for three days to figure it out.

I would recommend this book to anyone trying to be a better fuctioning adult. If you interact with other adults or children. If you are trying to improve or give closure to a relationship. If you want to be a better employee or boss , a better teacher or student . This book put a certain perspective back in focus for me and is helping me communicate more clearly and understand others more fully.

A Gift to Everyone Who Wants to Release Negative Patterns!

I'm an anthropologist and also fellow Southerner, like the author, who moved across country at age 18 to get out of a quite dysfunctional household and has been on a long spiritual path since then to release the negative patterns I grew up with. I just read this book, Growing Yourself Back Up, this past month and it has immensely changed my life. I learned about the book from life coach Cheryl Richardson's radio show on Hay House Radio, when she mentioned it to a caller with abandonment issues. Not only has the book made me more compassionate towards myself, but it has also made me more compassionate towards my parents without necessarily excusing their behavior or mine. Moreover, I feel it will help me in my new career journey. I will soon be working with and advising young undergraduate researchers, many of who also, from my past experiences as a teaching assistant, have had the effect of pulling me into a regression zone. Thus, I really appreciated the chapter that the author added for the helping professions. Finally, I can already see how it has made me more compassionate to myself in regards to my relationship with my partner (who happens to be the youngest of five, so there's a lot of young child energy with my middle child energy, haha). The book's particular section on always remembering that adults have choices in staying in relationships was, perhaps, a major relief in this sense, as well as the idea that I can always excuse myself for a moment when I am angry, use that time to punch a pillow or walk around the lake, and then return to any discussion. This was especially important for me because we just finished a two-year stint of a long-distance relationship because of a postdoc I had after graduate school, and the stress and exhaustion from the situation (esp. travel) did produce major moments of regression on both our parts.

That said, this book is a true gift to the world. It's definitely a book I am going to re-read and study many times. I will also integrate it in my mentoring with undergraduates. From my own experience, I've found that research is one of those stressful processes that can definitely trigger regression for both students and faculty (many of who are also big kids, as we know). Thus, thank you again, Dr. Lee, for this great book.

Big Island Visitor Must-Have

An excellent reference if you're traveling to the Big Island, especially if it's the first time. Very thorough and objective in its reviews, and seems to rely almost exclusively on actual personal experience of the author(s) rather than on hearsay. Unless your stay is lengthy, the book covers more than you'll ever be able to see/experience. However, the indexing and referencing is very good, and it's reasonably easy to find comments/recommendations on almost any travel-related interest. And on subjects where there are many options, such as beaches for example, they offer as "Gems" their own researched or experienced recommendations, with full explanations on why.

The book includes many helpful maps for easy location referencing. Sometimes it's a little difficult to move from one map to the next or to find more detail in inserts. But overall, the mapping is much better than you'll find on any of the local travel racks.

As with any guide, we didn't always personally agree with their assessment of subjects. For example we found the section on the Volcanos National Park to be totally over-hyped by suggesting that they simply skipped the designation of "Gem" features within the park because everything within the park qualified for that rating. To us the Park was interesting, but redundant after we'd seen the first crater, and crowded, with the most sought-after features, such as the active crater and active lava flow almost inaccessible except by full-day hikes over rough terrain, or very expensive non-Park commercial alternatives like helicopter or boat. We understand the need for separation from some of the dangerous areas, but their exclusion should be made a part of the discussion, and suggest even more of a need for rating the accessible features.

Overall it's a very useful guide, and being written with a dose of humor and "tongue in cheek", it's very readable. We bought it before our trip to Hawaii because the owner of our condo rental recommended it. In fact she kept one in all of her rentals because they are so useful, but we bought our own so we were prepared and felt comfortable taking it out with us.

The one must have guidebook for the Big Island

We have used the 7th edition for two trips to the Big Island and will use the 8th for our next coming up. I have the 7th on my phone and will cross reference between the two for day trips where I can only use the phone. The series is a one of a kind travel guide and sets the bar for all others to achieve. Doughty and his crew have really done their homework and the guides are written in a fresh, non boring, conversational style, inserting his sense of humor and personal Aloha for the islands throughout. In my opinion, this is the best guide for the Big Island, bar none. All the others I have purchased stay home when we go. Every aspect of your trip is covered whether you be a blatant pay for all tourist, a do it yourself adventurist, or one caught somewhere in between.

Most tourists already know that these are the only Hawaii guidebooks to use. They are the only books you find in many condos and gift shops (but not at Volcano National Park--read the reason [although it's probably expurgated by now] in the book). I said expurgated because they recently changed their advice that it is OK to drive through roads marked "no tresspassing" when there is legal access. I wonder who "got to" them, the government or the people who think they "own" pieces of land? They do give very vague hints that you should ignore their new "don't go there" advice, so definitely assume someone got to him.

They have an unusual internet model, sort of the opposite of Consumer Reports'. They could make more monet by putting only some of the condo info online and all of it in the book. But they do it the other way around. Apparently they would rather have room in the books for other information than squeeze out the last dollar on book sales.

One would expect them to visit each restaurant and tourist spot, but they apparently visit every condo as well...not to mention taking aerial photos of each one which help you get an accurate idea of the distance to the water.

And last but not least, the photograpy is beautiful. And in a relevant way--not all palm trees on beaches. Even if you're not sure you're going to Hawaii pick up a copy. In that case you're fine with an inexpensive older copy--Amazon currently has a 2011 for $ 2.48. Just be sure to buy another copy when you're planning to go.).

enjoyed reading but not as much as

I enjoyed reading this story almost as much as Awakened (Vampire Awakenings), the 1st book, which I loved. This story kept my interest. At no time was I bored. I liked the idea that Paige was a vampire hunter and Ian was a vampire. It added a different element to the story than the previous books and set up a situation where they were at odds with each other when first meeting. This helped keep the story interesting. Also Ian was a college student, which was the same as the hero and the heroine from the first book which I liked because it reminded me of it. This story had a HFN ending with a nice epilogue. This story had most of the former heroes and heroines from the previous stories make appearances, which I liked. Actually the only ones missing other than a slight reference to them were Liam and Sera, the parents of Ian and some of the other characters. Also Liam and Sera were the hero and heroine from the first book. I really liked them a lot and so it would have been nice if they made appearances in this book as well.

There are only a few reasons why I did not love this story like I did the first. I have a guilty pleasure. I love jealous, obsessive, & possessive heroes and Ian could not measure up to Liam in that regard. If he did then I could have recommended this story on an Amazon thread I belong to that lists stories with jealous & possessive heroes. Don't get me wrong, Ian was protective and somewhat possessive of Paige. However, he displayed very little jealousy. In fact, IMO Paige was more jealous than he was and it came out when OW paid attention to him. Men did not react to Paige like women did with Ian. In the first story OP were interested in and paid attention to both Liam & Sera. Liam had a hard time keep the jealousy under control. In addition, the intensity of Ian & Page's relationship paled in comparison to the first story although better then some other romance books that I have read. The sex scenes did not have the level of fire and passion that the1st book did. I am wondering if it had something to do with the fact that Ian needed sex from women to the point that he felt that he would die without it. Thus he had tons of one night stands, usually nightly. In fact, before meeting Paige, Paige saw him at a bar for 3 nights in a row and each time she did, he left to have sex with a different woman. When he met Paige and touched her, she calmed him. That of course, is a good thing but I wanted him to feel out of control passion like Liam did with Sera. I wanted Ian to feel like he had to be with Paige, that he needed to touch her and would die if she left him like Liam was with Sera. (I know that this is not realistic but then it is romance land and the story is with vampires and so it does not have to be the way men act in real life) While Ian eventually said words to that effect, I just was not feeling them. It was more telling than showing and as a result the sex scenes while fine, lacked hotness. There is a scene were Ian is sexually excited and needs a release. He makes out with Paige but then she hesitates to have sex with him. Ian told Paige that if she would not have sex with him then he would go have sex with OW because of his need. He was standing outside ready to leave to go have sex with OW when he told her to quickly make up her mind. That scene was a turnoff for me and I wish it was not added. With that said, I enjoyed the story and will be reading the next book in the series.

Fantastic Read!!

I absolutely loved this book! This is the fourth book in the Vampire Awakenings series and Ian and Paige were fantastic. Ian is the player with his good looks, smooth talking and sculptured body and Paige who has a rather tortured background when it comes to family and Vampires.
I love how this book continues to engage all of the previous books characters we have fallen in love with over the first 3 books, Ian I have to say I fell in love with; he was so easy going and a total male whore who couldn’t explain what he was feeling at first when coming into contact with Paige. He was so easy to read and you couldn’t help but love him even though he couldn’t remember how many women he had when Paige asked him….. haha
Thank you for an amazing book “yet again”, I can’t wait for the next book in the series!!

I really liked Ian, “there’s always a way. I made it to town in five minutes flat. It was off my average time, but I blame the tequila. Now would you like this bacon, hash browns and eggs, or not?” Ian is a very considerate man, "bending low, he kissed her again before giving her butt a light swat. “Why don’t you get dressed so we can get you something to eat and maybe do some shopping? I don’t know about you, but I’d like some new clothes, and this place doesn’t strike me as the kind of motel with a washer and dryer.” I really love this series I'm always looking forward to the next book and what adventure the characters will take us on.

Even if you do not agree with everything Justice Thomas believes, this book will still keep you reading until the end. I could not put it down. Thomas writes in such a personal and down to earth style that you really feel like you know him as a person. His life story is amazing and the events he details really come to life. I am so glad I got an early copy and read it before the inevitable partisians show up here and lambast it simply because they disagree with the author. I for one can read something that does not echo my thoughts, but sadly others cannot. If you love non-fiction and also multi-layered stories than give this book a try. It really is unforgettable no matter your political party.

Rude Is An Understatement....

This book is so offensive, it took me years to understand all the jokes. I'm just lucky I wasn't atop a ladder when the punch line came to me.

I dated an Amazon of a woman a year later, a magnificent woman, and found I couldn't talk to her because I was imagining her and the radiator of a chevy pickup, wondering if she could keep her feet flat on the ground. Thank goodness I never had the occassion to cheer on the student athletes who attended in Marfa, Texas.

Most books of humor, if you don't understand a joke, you're not too embarrassed to ask a friend to explain it to you, you're simply not willing to make the effort because all the jokes are lame. The jokes in this book aren't all funny ("That's NOT funny!) but they are all definitely rude, and demented in a way only H. Allen Smith could be.

Really funny jokes, stand up comics tell us, usually come close to the boundaries of bad taste. These jokes don't come within a mile of those boundaries; they are definitely on the far side of that line.

In the 1980s, I mailed my original paperback to a former coworker, thinking that the Texas jokes would tickle his funny bone. He was so offended, he never talked to me again. I've kept my eyes open for more copies ever since; there are several other people I'd like to give copies to. However, I have reached an age where all my enemies are either dead or too tired to both me much, and I'd love to reread this on my Kindle. I wouldn't want it on my bookshelves, though, where people could realize how warped I truly am. Nope, I'd rather - in the words of H. Allen Smith - be nibbled to death by a Muscovy duck.

This book REALLY begs for rerelease in Kindle format.

The very best jokes ever compiled (even better than "Pretty Good Jokes"; sorry). Most cannot be told in polite company, though a few can be cleaned up a bit. You'll just howl. Go in a room and close the door. If you MUSY be in a public place, settle for shaking as opposed to howling. I bemoan the fact that I have lost my copy, and they can be expensive.

In order to understand the Pakistani state and government’s treatment of non-dominant ethnic groups after the failure of the military operation in East Pakistan and the independence of Bangladesh, this book looks at the ethnic movements that were subject to a military operation after 1971: the Baloch in the 1970s, the Sindhis in the 1980s and Mohajirs in the 1990s.

The book critically evaluates the literature on ethnicity and nationalism by taking nationalist ideology and the political divisions which it generates within ethnic groups as essential in estimating ethnic movements. It goes on to challenge the modernist argument that nationalism is only relevant to modern-industrialised socio-economic settings. The available evidence from Pakistan makes clear that ethnic movements emanate from three distinct socio-economic realms: tribal (Baloch), rural (Sindh) and urban (Mohajir), and the book looks at the implications that this has, as well as how further arguments could be advanced about the relevance of ethnic movements and politics in the Third World.

It provides academics and researchers with background knowledge of how the Baloch, Sindhi and Mohajir ethnic conflict in Pakistan took shape in a historical context as well as probable future scenarios of the relationship between the Pakistani state and government, and ethnic groups and movements.
