A book you need on your Bookshelf

I've always faced a question during Agile trainings where participants have asked me for reference books on Agile, and I've been giving them a list of books but with the coming of Xanpan by Allan Kelly, I have started giving this book's reference during training sessions. Why? Because, though it is a new method, it has been written in an engaging way with examples shown throughout the text. Usually, the first book on any of the Agile methods has not been directed towards novice or new practitioners and Allan's book fills that gap quite nicely. People, in the trenches, want something easily digestible with applications shown, and this first book on Xanpan is up to the mark in that direction. Even for the clients or senior executives, a quick read on the following two chapters, is able to make the necessary connect and I've seen appreciations regarding these whenever I pointed them to those chapters.

Q. Is it only geared towards new practitioners?
No, it isn't.
Even if you're an experienced , you will find lot of value in this book on improving the existing practices being followed in your project/s.

You're in for a treat then. Allan has already started the work on the second book of the series with a focus on management & requirements.
And, you'll like to read Chapter 4,5 & 6 of this book which will provide a lot more insights on maximising the value of the product. So, I heartily recommend this book to be part of your book-shelf.

When Kanban Meets XP

I’m using Kanban since 2011 to organize my work (from everyday tasks to small software projects and big holiday trips). Even if Kanban is a success for me, I had the feeling that something is missing to adapt Kanban in a bigger software project. When people with different responsibilities work together there need to be some common rules on how the work should be done. Plain Kanban doesn’t answer this. Allan Kelly found the same problems in his work. Unhappy with the strictness of Scrum he crafted his own method called Xanpan, a combination of Kanban and Extreme Programming (XP).
XP focus is on engineering practices to write good code and achieve a sustainable level of quality, while Kanban (or Scrum) covers the organisational aspects. Using the best of both makes Xanpan an interesting new player for organising software projects. The acceptance of unplanned work and how it is handled in Xanpan is in my opinion a great plus over Scrum: You keep working and get things done. There is no sprint that must be aborted nor do I have to throw away my iteration plan. I simply keep working and do the new work when I haven’t any more important tasks at hand. There are many more good ideas that can make a difference in the daily work.

An important contribution to the agile literature

This book is an important contribution to the agile literature. It tackles the challenges that most teams face, head-on, by proposing alternatives that some might consider heretical. This sort of discussion is invaluable in the face of corporate certification of activities that promote blind faith and dogma rather than observation and critical thought.
As you read this book, you will probably find yourself disagreeing with Allan from time to time. I certainly did. You will gain from these differences of opinion, as long as you are mature enough to actually take the time to think through the motivation for Allan's suggestions and consider the possibly beneficial repercussions they might have.
You will also find new and innovative techniques that will help you address some of the perennial issues that have been ignored by other popular development approaches. How will you cope with unplanned work? What happens when priorities change suddenly? Why isn't the product owner prioritising technical tasks? When will we find time to implement the improvements identified in the retrospective?
Go read the book. You'll be glad you did.
