Brilliant and Beautiful Book
By Chris Olson
I'm familiar with Kal's cartoons more from multiple years of the "Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year" editions than from the Economist. That said, this is a wonderful addition to any collection of political or editorial cartoons, particularly at the asking price (which could have been significantly higher had it not been for a well-funded Kickstarter campaign). This huge softcover book is representative of the best of Kal's work over the couse of his career - highly satirical, highly detailed, and extremely funny for those with the sense to understand it.

Great collection from an amazing career
By T. A. Frederick
I first got introduced to the Economist, and Kevin Kallaugher (Kal)'s cartoons in high school over a decade ago. As the lead cartoonist, and now editorial cartoonist, for the Economist and the Baltimore Sun Kal has covered almost any topic you can think of over the past 35 years. What distinguishes his work from so many other political cartoonists is the wonderful combination of wit and detail in his work. Few cartoonists put the level of detail into their work and some of his pieces amaze in their complexity. This book, funded from a kickstarter campaign, captures many great works over 190 pages in a large page format. Most pages have 1-2 cartoons on them with suprisingly many in color. Each page has some context on the theme of the page, and the book is broken into 8 or so chapters, each with an introduction. If you're a fan of Kal's work, or just cartoonism in general, you will definitely not be disapointed.

When Kal's Pen Is Out, No One Is Safe
By A. Silverstone
Kevin Kallaugher (Kal) is a brilliant editorial cartoonist. This collection reflects the highlights of his work for 35 years at the Economist. Included are several essays about his work. What is amazing to read is how he first was hired by the Economist. It is one of those chain of events that happened just right, for which we have then been the beneficiaries. The cartoons are grouped into chapters on Caricatures, the United States, Europe, Economist Covers, Business and Economics, and International topics. Originally hired to do caricatures, Kal's drawings accentuate physical characteristics while simultaneously displaying character traits like the determination of General Schwartzkopf or the energy of Mick Jagger.
Elections and political contests are always a target for editorial cartoonists. So whether Kal has turned the election into a saloon fight, football game, duel or epic arm wrestle, you are both entertained and intrigued. As with the best, Kal may make you laugh, but always to stop and think. He has a thoughtful approach, and his cartoons are often loaded with details that help tell a more complex story.
As with the best, Kal has a strong point of view, but he also does not have any sacred cows. He skewers the right and left equally to show the foibles and tragedies in the world. But it is always done with good nature.
This book is a great way to leaf through a survey of Kal's long and illustrious career.
