This book presents research results, investigations and field experiences on contact-related behavior of hydraulic closures, such as gates of locks, weirs, movable flood barriers, shipyard and harbor docks. The subject is discussed in an interdisciplinary manner. Presented are design loads, tribological and other phenomena significant for the design and maintenance of gares and their contact components, as well as the impact of those phenomena on the type selection and design processes. The solutions and references originate from the author’s experience in engineering, research and management of water related projects, particularly hydraulic gates. Predominate part of this experience was collected in his function of chief engineer for infrastructural projects by the Civil Engineering Department of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management. In addition to the author’s own solutions, some latest projects of his colleagues in the Netherlands and abroad have shortly been discusseed. This book is an updated and extended version of the doctoral thesis defended in 2005 on the Gdansk University of Technology.

About the Author
Ryszard DANIEL, senior consultant of Rijkswaterstaat, was a supervisor, designer, manager and reviewer of large hydraulic projects in the Netherlands and other countries. He is an active member of PIANC and IABSE and author of numerous publications, particularly on hydraulic steel structures and bridges.

Helpful for professionals and students in hydraulic engineering

There are fields of technology that barely come along in books. Such a field is the design of hydraulic structures, like navigation locks, river weirs, flood barriers, harbor docks etc. After all, such structures are not constructed as frequently as, e.g., buildings or bridges. Yet, they play a significant role in our lives, helping navigation, trade, river management or contributing to the safety of our homes against flooding. The book “Contact behavior of lock gates” can be recommended to any professional or student who has chosen this field as his/her occupation. It handles the issue that makes hydraulic gates different from other structures - their contact behavior. Additionally, it also presents the types, systems, performances and the ways to make the best choices while designing, purchasing or managing hydraulic gates. The discussed projects (most of them from the Netherlands, some also e.g. from the US, Panama, Germany and Belgium) illustrate the conclusions.
